Installing iron sights on a Rem 700 action

Hi,

I am looking for advice and options for installing rear peep sight on a Rem 700 modern action and front post at the muzzle. Goal: hunting out to 200m.

I like receiver sights, having used many in the past. The Williams FP would be a good choice with click adjustments.

Saying that, I think that your 200m is a bit optimistic. 100m is more realistic. Have you ever used receiver sights?
 
Is your rifle drilled and tapped on the left side of the rear of the receiver? If so, the Williams 5D or Foolproof could be installed. No holes? Can be drilled and tapped. Or, a sight can be mounted using the scope base mounted holes on top of the rear bridge. Williams Guide Rear Sight.
Front sight ramp will require drilling and tapping the barrel. Rather than D&Ting the barrel, I prefer to make a banded ramp front sight unit.
 
I've always found that a receiver sight sharpens my eyesight a bit. I put a Williams on my 700. Sourcing a matching front ramp was a bit of a challenge but I got it done. I use a similar set-up on my 1895 Winchester, 1899 Savage and Husky Mauser.

200 meters is OK. You will need a better set-up past that. Remember they used to shoot 700 to 1000 meters with "peeps" before F class became the F class with optics. Certainly better eyes make it easier, but you have to use what you got with eyes. Here's my Remington 700 Classic in 350 Rem Mag.

I've probably used this set-up on 6 or more rifles. Crude, inexpensive but effective. For hunting, not target. Here's one on a Mosin.

Not out of the ordinary at all: mind you it depends on the type of aperture sight and ones ability with it which will dictate effectiveness at longer ranges.

OP. you will need to hire a gunsmith or machinist to affix the front sight: a dovetail will need to be cut, or under the first inch of barrel from the muzzle will need turning to a true cylinder for the band style of front sight. There are also plates available that require a flat and screw holes machined on barrel near muzzle: onto such plates, some sights are mounted.

EDIT: I have this rear sight, and matching front hood... both with adjustable irises.(fortunately I found used in Canada for much less) At over 300quid for the rear sight alone, they are expensive and complicated for <200y hunting, but sights like this are easily capable of precise shooting beyond 200y. Front and rear apertures mean even less than stellar eyesight will still pass muster in their use. RPA also manufactures simpler hunting sights.
