Installing muzzle device on M305 build

Hey guys,

I just received my Griffin Armament Flash Comp in the mail today from a fellow CGNer who had it up on the EE. Just a few questions I have with installation that I thought someone could help me on.

I've watched a few videos on how to install muzzle devices and many if not all used shims/crusher washers. The barrel on my build is a USGI and does not have the lip before the threads to let the shims/crusher washers do their job (not sure if I explained this correctly or not).

The instructions on the package say to use shims so that when hand tightened the device sits in the 10 o clock position.

My main question is that since shims/crusher washers will not work for me, how should I go about tightening the device onto the barrel. The package says 30 foot pounds of torque.

Really just looking for my own little instructions manual from everyones input!

Thanks
Ben

Well Ben , hate ta break it to ya but you probably need a direct connect muzzle brake or a castlenut version.
Neither use crushwashers as there is no provision on a factory m14 barrel to utilize them.
Others may have differing experiences, we'll see

Ben, got your message. Figure better to answer here to help those with same questions.
I would email the manufacturer for their recommendation.
I've handled and installed a lot of different muzzle devices on these rifles but have limitted to no personal experience with the exact model being discussed here.

Is it just me or are there only flash comps in 7.62mm for either left hand AK threads or for 5/8x24 (typical 7.62x51 or .308 barrel threading)? Wouldn't you need something like a SEI adapter that goes on like a normal M14 muzzle device but has 5/8x24 threads on the end? I think Abhobyist had something like that on the EE if you can't find the SEI one anywhere.

That looks to be someone's custom work on the end of that barrel.
My advice is to take it to a good machinist and get that fixed up in 1/2x28 TPI. Then look for a .308 muzzle device and crush washer for said threads.
Dlask Arms has done a few hundred M14 type barrels in this manner with an equally happy bunch of shooters to connfirm. ;)
I see no way for you to use a crush washer or castlenut type unit with the features of that barrel.
If it's a GI barrel, it certainly appears modified in a way I'm not familiar with hehehe

Yup, I bought one from him a couple weeks ago (nice guy) & noticed he has more for sale on the EE in the modern rifles & black rifle parts section. Keep in mind his units are designed to fit factory Norc threads!

Good question....Kind of my dilemma right now. The previous owner said that it's a USGI barrel cut down to 18.5 and threaded to 5/8-24.
Any suggestions on how to figure out the size of threads. I have a 5/8-24 muzzle device that I can screw on the end, but it doesn't go on as smoothly as my SEI m14 vortex flash eliminator.

Maybe someone here has a really good eye for thread sizes??? ha

Than that is a 5/8x24 thread on the barrel, but it looks like who ever threaded the barrel did a 1/2 ass job and that is why the muzzle brake wouldn't screw to the end. I believed that is your problem dude.

Yeah, I always thought that when full length barrels got cut down, they were rethreaded to 1/2-28 like a 2.23/5.56 and then you had whatever flash hider reamed out reason being that there wasn't enough "meat" on the standard barrel to thread to 5/8-24 and have a shoulder for a crush washer or jam nut. Maybe get it to a smith and have it rethreaded?

Just an update/cry for more advice......took my barrel to a friend of mine who is a machinist. After measuring the threading we discovered it is not 5/8x24. It is in fact M1A standard threading (.595x32) which some of you expected.
Does anyone know of any adaptors out there which will work with my barrel threading? I know Smith Enterprise has an adapter available, but I am not sure if you need the "spine slots" which my barrel does not have since it was cut and rethreaded.
Here's a picture of a barrel with the spine slots.

Any suggestions are appreciated as I would still like to mount my 5/8x24 muzzle device on the barrel...just need an adaptor.

Thanks everyone for the info...really appreciate it!

Ben

Im pretty sure the SEI adapter will utilise the slots as well since it is secured using the castle nut. But I could be wrong.

Your machinist buddy could cut barrel threads for 1/2-28, then make an adapter with 1/2-28 id and 5/8 od. Lok-tite in place and then install your after market FH......

Prolly cheaper than the m-14.ca adapter purchased and re-jiggered...

Does anyone have any experience with the GemTech M1A thread adaptor? Wondering if it will work on my barrel threading since I do not have the spine slots in the barrel, but have M1A threading (.595x32).

Thanks
Ben

Doubt it will fit if it is keyed/splined inside to fit splineways.

It's sounding like yer only option for that particular barrel is a Direct Connect unit. I would be looking at a smith enterprize Direct Connect or DC type muzzle device. Like a good iron brake perhaps. Doesn't need a crushwasher. There are a few versions so be sure yer looking at the right one.... The "DC" version.
Yankee hill machine and troy (I think) also make "Direct Connect" muzzle devices which also can be used with no crushwasher. None of the above need or use the splineways and thread to M14/M1A muzzle threads.
That's all I got for ya.

I think the Gemtech will work, But it will be very hard to find one in Canada.
