Installing sights on HP9-1 shotgun...

Hello everyone,

I have an HP9-1 shotgun (870 clone) which has a 14" cylinder bore.

It came stock with a bead sight, which I hate. I'd like to install either rifle sights or ghost ring sights on this shotgun, but there are no mounting holes.

I don't want to install a rail, as the muzzle is already drilled and tapped for the bead, and I don't want to bother with extra optics.

I'm just wondering how ghost rings/rifle sights are fixed on to the receiver and the barrel?

Also, can anyone recommend a good set of iron sights for this shotgun?

They are usually affixed with screws set into holes drilled and tapped by someone knowledgeable on the subject.

Maybe you could take it to a gunsmith or something like that.

I had Remington open sights put onto my 12.5" Dominion. They are brazed or silver soldered and the barrel was refinished. Arwen Ace did a great job. I also have modified one of my other rear sights to an Express sight style and might add a large tritium front bead. Stock set looks like this....

I like that a lot, Ike... Nice work indeed. The problem is that there aren't any accessible gunsmiths around here.

Would a machinist be able to do the drilling/tapping? I am comfortable installing the sights themselves.
 
The nice thing about doing just the barrel is that I only had to mail thta out to Arwen Ace and my turn around in BC was very fast. The nice thing about all the sights being on the barrel is that I can change the barrel onto my other 870s and not have to worry about only having half of the sights.

I have two other guns (shotgun and rifle) that I used JB weld to install Remington open sights. I haven't really heated the barrel or bush tested them to know how durable it is going to be.

Re your question..Generally drilling and tapping is easy, the hardest part in installing sights is to make sure they are aligned properly and not off-centered.
 
The cheapest and easiest solution would be to buy one of the current Grizzly 870 shotguns with the factory installed ghost ring sights, and sell the HP-9.

I would guesstimate that course of action would save you around $200. And probably a bit of waiting time (parts delivery, installation).

Of course you end up with a 12.5" instead of a 14", if that's a problem.
 
The Trijicon/Wilson Combat/Scattergun Technology Trak-Loc requires only two receiver holes to be drilled and tapped. This is easily done. The new front sight is fixed over the existing front sight. You could do-it-yourself or you could get someone else - like Tactical Ordnance - to do it.

Wendel, since he only had a bead on the front the Wilson Combat front sight won't fit straight on. It's meant to go over the raised front sight post. You can have an adapter make, silver soldered on then put the WC sight over it.
