So Im thinking on buying a Winchester M70 XTR Sporter in 30-06. The rifle is in pretty good condition except in its past life the barrel has been cut from 24" to 18 1/2". It has or had a reqular contour barrel with no sights . If I find a used barrel would the TPI be all the same up until FN bought them . I just read a thread that they should be 16TPI. Am I correct on this. The rifle is approx. 1993 manufacture. I don't want a new barrel if possible and I don't want to change caliber. Thanks Bob

A rifle of that vintage will have a 1-16 shank. A take-off should screw right on. Make sure breech face to bolt nose gap, and headspace are within limits. Sight orientation? I don't know. Remington 700 sight holes will not be TDC, although headspace may be correct. I might have a M70 .30-06 take-off. Will check.

Thanks tiriaq .I definitely would have a smith or competent person do this for me. I will be looking in the EE shortly for a barrel. I just need the proper info. I do not want sights as I would use a scope on this rifle and as you said a used one installed with sights may not line up.

Ruger 77 and some Tikka T3 barrels have the same tenon measurements (except length I guess) as older Win m70 so your options to find proper caliber barrel even brand new take out are quite good.

So I thought I would find a barrel quicker and easier. Does not seem to be an abundance of used 30-06 caliber barrels out there for sale for this rifle. . I have been offered some in 270 Win and was wondering if I change caliber to 270Win, would any changes have to be made or will they screw on and just set head space if required. Bob
