Instead of buying, perhaps a project?

As you will learn next weekend the ORA has many different competition classes. F(M) being F Class (M)anufactured is a great place to start. Not a huge outlay of money to get started into and if you purchase the right equipment to start off with, you will have a good base to build a custom rifle on.

Yes, this is what I'd like to do. The only thing is, since I have a membership at The Grange, and high-powered rifles can't be fired there, I'd like to do something to get me into some of the mechanics of the sport. If I got a .22lr, I could take it to The Grange with my Glock 22, and practice both to my heart's content.

If I could find a sub-$300 bolt action .22lr, I could put a good scope and bipod on it and learn over the winter. The scope could then be moved to whatever I end up getting for the spring.

I'm really looking forward to the intro day!

Given my interest in learning long-range precision shooting, is there any particular rim-fire you'd steer me towards? Also, what scope should I get?

Thanks,

Rob

I used to shoot 22 all year round (three position shooting), it's the best practice you will get, and the best bang for the buck. I shoot a Win.52 and a Walther, both single shots but I started with a plain jane Win.75 repeater, any 22 will do but the bolt actions have the upper end covered when you are talking accuracy. I use open sights almost exclusively, target peep sights actually. The breathing and trigger control required with the 22's is no different than trying to do the same with any high power rifle. The scaled down targets we use indoors extrapolate very effectively what happens at the longer ranges.
Best way to spend the winter months IMO.

A friend offered to sell me his "Mark 12" by Savage-Anschutz with an inexpensive scope - a Tasco 6 - 24X. for $400. What do you think?

Rob, I am not familiar with that model but anything carying the Anschutz name is usually very good quality.
