One year ago today, horseman2 (Mel) took the initiative and made a firm proposal to begin a 100 yard (or meters) .22LR challenge. That challenge officially began August 1, 2021. Mel tells me that unfortunately this year time doesn't permit him to continue running the challenge he created, but he welcomes a new challenge being run in it's place.

As a result, I'm willing to do a 2022 version of the challenge. I will not be participating/entering.

The same rules adopted by horseman2 are proposed for this year's 100 Yards/Meters .22LR Challenge.

Without including all the details in this post, the basic requirement is shooting three ten-shot groups at 100 yards at the same target (which itself has four bulls), with a three group average as the overall goal of the target. For more details about the rules or requirements, see the links at the bottom of this post.

This isn't meant as a competition. Except for the requirement that all shots be within a 3" circle on the target, there is no minimum size requirement. It's meant as an opportunity for shooters to try their best and post the results. Shooters can make as many submissions as they want, so long as they are an improvement over their previous targets. Participants may try different rifles.

This thread is not itself the challenge thread. It's only to gauge interest. If there is enough interest, I'll begin a new thread specifically for the 100 yard .22LR challenge.

Target concerns.

Last year some shooters indicated they would have been happy to give the challenge a try, but were unable to get the targets, which shall be on at 65 lb cardstock. It's worth noting that photocopy-type of paper is too prone to tearing to be used.

To encourage participation, I will make available at no cost to interested and serious shooters up to eight targets. For practical reasons this offer will be initially limited to the first ten readers who indicate they wish to give the 100 yard challenge a try.

Please indicate below if you are interested in this challenge. For those interested in the free targets, provide a mailing address to me by PM. They would be mailed to you beginning the first week of August. If there is insufficient interest, the challenge will not take place.

The original idea for the challenge was made here in post #60 https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2177453-100M-YD-22LR-10-rnd-groups/page6.

The official rules for the challenge are here in post #1 https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...0614-100-Yards-Metres-22-Long-Rifle-Challenge

Suggestions for changes to the rules may be made.

I'm in. How does one get 65lb cardstock? Would Staples carry it and would it print in a regular ink jet type printer?

We get some at Walmart for my wife's labels for her soaps. So Staples should.. I did this challenge last year and my ink jet printer had no issue printing using cardstock.

Michael's apparently has it as well for 9.99
Staples starts at 25$ or 10c/page. You can probably just get the print center to make you a few copies!

For anyone wondering about why cardstock should be used, it's simply because it gives much clearer, more reliable for measuring holes in the target. Photocopy paper is notoriously unreliable for making clear, distinct .22LR bullet holes, with the result that measurements may not be as clear desirable.

If you have a Staples nearby, you can get your targets printed by taking a master to them. You may have to wait a day, depending on how busy they are.

The easier alternative, and the way I've been doing it, is to go to the Staples website, select "Services," then click on "Print + Marketing Services". Scroll down a wee bit and select "Print a Document". Go down to "Order Now" (which isn't a commitment to buy) and click on it. You can upload a pdf of the target, click on copyright confirmation and click on "Create". Under "Paper Colour" make sure it's Black and White. Then under "Paper Stock" select Cardstock "White 65 lb". Select the quantity of copies desired. It should be 30 cents per copy. Make payment and pick-up arrangements and you may be able to pick up the same day.

The method described above is easy and straightforward. I'm not very computer-savvy, and almost completely smartphone illiterate (I rarely use them), and found I could complete the process of ordering copies easily on my laptop.

Anyone having difficulty finding a pdf of the target (which may be available by following one of the links to horseman2's original posts) they are welcome to PM me with their email address and I can send them a pdf of the target by email.

Again, for anyone who can't get to a place like Staples, please indicate on this thread if you would like free targets mailed to you. You may then PM me your mailing address.

Staples has 65 lb. The bulk 250 sheet package will run about 10 cents a sheet. It will print through an Ink Jet Printer.
The holes cut in the heavier grades are nice clean holes that can be easily measured and when shooting for score here is no tearing through scoring lines.
Buying at Staples Service Center gets cheaper with volume. The ladies will print your order from a stick.

Good idea! But 3" groups at 100m is not really a challenge, can be done with an old Cooey open sight. Should go 2".

Point of this, is challenge yourself. You can have bigger targets and still shoot tiny groups.

Considering when I tried I had the largest groups, alot of the guys were sub moa. But I learned a lot.

What's the closest place with 100m+ ranges near the GTA? I love the range I go to but its only 50m indoor

I can think of a few outdoors, but they all require membership probably it's too late for you to sign that up.
Unless you can find some members willing to host you as a guest for once or twice.

Here's the rationale behind the 3" ten-shot groups at 100. The 3 inches represents the approximate size of the largest circle on each of the four bulls on the target. The original rules set by horseman2 required all ten shots in each of the three groups to be within that largest circle.

At the same time, it's anticipated that, rather than showing readers all the three inch ten-shot groups they shoot at 100 yards, many shooters will want to post their best three group average results and any improvements they later achieve.

Of course, if anyone can shoot a single -- let alone three -- 3-inch or better ten-shot group at 100 yards using an old Cooey with open sights they are encouraged to post it on the challenge when it goes up in the days to come. It's always nice to see unexpected and unlikely outcomes.

Regarding the official 100 yard challenge thread, I'll post it on August 1, 2022, which is one year since the original challenge began. It seems reasonable to consider all targets shot as of today as eligible.

One thing I want argue is that subtraction factor doesn’t really make any difference though.
I do understand the intention of group size minus SF is to get the true size from the centres of the two farthest holes.
But if everybody is using the same SF in this case .22, it doesn’t matter anymore.
At the end no matter how you calculating the scores, either total or average, it’s going to be a linear function.
So subtracting a constant doesn’t really matter
