I just posted this in the action shooting forum as well, but figured that lots of the rimfire rifle folks probably don't visit that area.

About 10 years ago we ran mini-rifle competitions for a couple of seasons at the Eastern Ontario Handgun Club just east of Ottawa. This game got started by British IPSC shooters in 1997 after the government there confiscated all pistols. The action shooters wanted to keep shooting IPSC and rimfire semi-auto rifles were the best available firearms to keep the sport going.

The target fits on a letter size sheet of paper, so it is cheap to produce. The targets are typically shot at ranges from 50m down to 10m depending on the course of fire. Normally, the highest two shots in each target count. The score on the paper targets is divided by the time taken to fire all of your shots. If you miss, there is a penalty of minus 10 points. As in pistol practical shooting you are also shooting against the clock.

Given the current popularity of 'tacticool' .22 rimfire rifles, the time may be right for reviving this fun (and cheap) shooting event. The IPSC world body is currently developing standardized international rules for minirifle competition.

Click here for a detailed description of how mini-rifle's competition works

So, is anyone in the Ottawa area interested in giving this a try?

"The IPSC world body is currently developing standardized international rules for minirifle competition." well there's 800 rules nobody wants...lol

What's wrong with setting up some run and gun or three gun style events with rimfire? Too many rules will be in place for their idea to work, that is why it is slowly getting less participation.

Are you required to be black badge qualified for a rimfire challenge?

I just got my PAL 4 or 5 months ago. Until a month ago(when I joined CSSA) I didn't know there was action shooting. I am interested in trying action shooting. I think that the mini rifle would be an excellent and inexpensive intro to 3 gun and other action shooting sports. I wouldn't give up on rimfire challenge. I will support a rimfire challenge if it is offered again.

I agree with keeping IPSC rules out of it. General gun safety rules should be enough. Keep it informal at first, fun and easy to setup/score. Too many rules and requirements for training and equipment will turn people away.

I think shooting steel targets is the best way to go, you'll hear the hits out to 100 yards easily and targets can be set up so there's minimal to no effort required to re-set a stage (no taping etc).

A couple of months ago, EESA near Aylmer hosted it's "Rimfire Challenge", which included an indoor IPSC type set-up, and several outdoor events:

Six people showed up. I don't understand it, and yes it was well-advertised.

Didn't know about it, but it seems like this happens a lot at EESA, where a fully booked shoot turns out to be almost empty.

They need to get people to put a non-refundable deposit down on it to go. That almost always gets people off their butts to drive out to the shoot.

It's the way of the internet.
