Well i think i'd like to get into precision shooting but i'm not sure what gun i should start with. I could afford to get a timberwolf but i'm not sure if i should start with something smaller.

any ideas/advise?

We have gone over it a thousand times.

Search and you'll get tons of info.

First you have to let us know what kind of precision shooting you are looking to get into.

Do you just want to shoot things really far away? Or 100 yard bench-rest? Precision shooting can mean tons of different things.

You will want to start off with a smaller caliber rather then jump straight up to something like the 338 LM or 50BMG.

I have a cabin north of Edmonton and with a range finder i found a couple pipe lines/ cutlines that i can shoot 2km or even further. I currently have a browning x bolt 30 06, and i enjoy that but i only shoot about 600m with that. I'd like to start shooting 1500m or further if possible

Get the Timberwolf, there is one for sale right now in the Exchange of Precision and Target rifles for 5800 and only 100 rounds down the barrel. You can use the 30-06 to get to 1500 and beyond but the 338 Lapua would be more practical.

If i had the cash right now i would 100% buy that Timberwolf in the EE.

There are usually about 4-5, .338 LM on the EE on any given day, wonder why?
I am not sure who said it here on CGN, "I thought my rifle was chambered for .338LM but apparently it is chambered for $5 bills".

I shoot long range competition out to 1000 yards with a .308 and a .223. In the UK they shoot Match Rifle out to 1200 yards with .308's.

Mystic Player here in CGN is reaching out to 1 mile with a .223.

When I decided I wanted to learn to shoot far I picked up a Savage 110 BA in 300 winmag. I'm pretty happy with it so far. Could be a cheaper way to go then the Timberwolf, but nowhere near as awesome.

Run away now before the Addiction gets you!!! LOL

Find a quality 223 rem (rem, Savage, Tikka, whatever) and start there. Its cheap, loads of readily available target ammo commercially available, and can still reach WAY out there if you learn to drive it. Plan to spend double of the rifle on optics and phase into reloading if you don't already.

Shooting is a lot more fun, when your body doesn't hurt, your ears don't scream and your wallet isn't on the accelerated weight watchers program. Why on earth would you go with 338lm when 223 308 or 300 wm will get you there? You can shoot a lot more when shooting 223 than 338. You become a better shooter, you spend more time shooting, as it doesn't pound you to death. If you need long range knock down power, by all means go 338, for punching paper its overkill in everyway. It doesn't shoot flat so you still have to calculate for bullet drop, you are calculating anyhow, so why not go 223? its just math??

I'd personally build a boomer of some 7mm or 30cal variant, actually been thinking about a 300RUM with some of Bergers new heavy hybrids...One project at a time though....

I love it when people ask "Why?", when it's obvious they don't care about the answer and only use it to set up and expound their own narrow view on the subject.

Be a lot easier and just as transparent to just call the poster a dumbass, tell him why your position is superior and skip the faux question.

And on the (highly unlikely) chance your question was actually asked in the interest of expanding your horizons, the answer, as always, is because he can.

If you can afford the rifle and are ok with the expense of the ammo that goes along with it I say buy what you want the first time. The Timberwolf is bada$$. I especially like the tan colour with the new folding stock.

When you ask for an opinion...

:D

Opinion; In general, an opinion is a subjective belief, and is the result of emotion or interpretation of facts. An opinion may be supported by an argument, although people may draw opposing opinions from the same set of facts. Opinions rarely change without new arguments being presented. However, it can be reasoned that one opinion is better supported by the facts than another by analysing the supporting arguments.[1] In casual use, the term opinion may be the result of a person's perspective, understanding, particular feelings, beliefs, and desires. It may refer to unsubstantiated information, in contrast to knowledge and fact-based beliefs.

That said if your pockets are deep it would be cool to have one. If mine were deeper I'd have an 30-378 insted of a 300 WM.

Depends a lot on if you want to plink or compete. Plink, anything goes ... compete and you have to deal with rule limitations. I used to like plinking with my Mini-14, 'til I learned what a decent bolt rifle could do.

Well i think i'd like to get into precision shooting but i'm not sure what gun i should start with. I could afford to get a timberwolf but i'm not sure if i should start with something smaller.

Sorry man, didn't realize using common sense was offensive. doing things just because you can is not always wise.

Young guys don't protect their ears and regret it later in life. Recoil is an issue and like damaged ear drums, soft tissue damage in time will catch up with folks. 338lm for target shooting, if not managed correctly, can be flat out foolish. Heck your life, your body, do as you wish, after all you are free to do so, I thought pointing out the obvious would be helpful, obviously not to all.

Guys used to laugh at the asbestos warnings to. Look where that's gone.

Anyone looking at long range target work should consider recoil. It's an issue.

Some people need Giant calibers to go shooting. My favorite caliber right now is my 204 ruger. Shortly after that 6br. 300WM and other big calibers come farther down the list.

The orignal poster wanted to know if he should start off with a smaller caliber. You would have to be special to say that starting off with a small round is a bad idea.

Seeing as he's already shooting to 600m with a 30-06 and wants to go to 1500, I would think a .338 would be great if it was in the budget. It's not like he's a new shooter, and as he already has an intermediate caliber why go down to .2XX, laterally to a .308 or slightly up to .300WM when a 338 fits the bill perfectly?

I know my next step in long range shooting will be the .338 (or .50, budget permitting). I personally don't see the point in trying any of the hunting calibers when there are much bigger and more satisfying bangs just around the corner from them. :)
