daniellybbert,
Saying you want to compete in the shooting sports is like saying you want to race vehicles.. There are many types and places to shoot.
Without knowing which area you live in, it's hard to direct you where to go, or who to see.
ALL of the shooting sports are worth getting involved in. ALL have their attributes and ALL rely on the basic fundamentals of shooting for a person to do well and excel in.
If you are not old enough for a PAL yet, some of the air pistol competitions have some serious matches that teach great shooting techniques.
If you don't live in one of the major centres you may have a local fish and game association that can help you find the local ranges. From there it is simply a matter of talking to the members and find out what they offer.
Any good advise will start with telling you to take some good instruction and learn proper shooting habits, fundamentals, and safety precautions. It's like the old learn to walk before you run idea. Find out what types of shooting competitions are in your area and watch 'n learn. Most of the clubs love to have new guys, and if you show some interest, all of us like to show off our toys.
The Alberta Federation of Shooting Sports, (AFSS) supports pretty well every type of competition in Alberta. Have a look at their web space and contact them for assistance or contacts in your area.

Hope this helps, and feel free to ask away for any other info, or PM me if you wish.
Good luck, and good shooting.
