Just found this, they are Bermuda Regiment soldiers on excersize here in Canada this year, look at the rifles they're issued! :shock: Standard semi only civy models in Choate stocks. Now I've seen everything... :lol:

A complete break was made with the standard British infantry weapon-the rifle- in the 'eighties when the L1A1 SLR was replaced, not with the SA80 ( still lost in interminable development Hell, at that point,) but the American Ruger Mini-14. This 5.56mm rifle, effectively scaled down from the same design the USA fought the Second World War with, was originally intended for sporting use, and despite being retro-fit with a black, plastic Choate stock ( which ruins itssight line,) is much hated by the troops to whom it is issued. A rumour circulating Warwick Camp holds that the decision to purchase it, rather than any of the large assortment of other 5.56mm rifles the Bermuda Regiment had inspected, was taken after Bill Ruger had offered to engrave the Bermuda Regiment badge into each rifle. One hopes that is not true, though it is certainly the case that each rifle does indeed carry a lovely reproductiuon of the unit's badge. A more likely reason for the choice was the very low cost of the Ruger rifle, by comparison to its competitors-about half the price of an Armalite, or less."

I read that it was favoured due to its non-menacing appearance, but it's just that; something I read, so who knows... I sure as hell wouldn't want to be issued one :?
The Mini-14 is the only non restricted .223 auto I'm not familiar with at least in passing (notable exception, never fired a G36), and I'll probably keep it that way

At least their troops know the difference. I guess the Mini-14 is a good for what they use them for. Don't expect to see the Bermuda Regiment doing a tour in Iraq anytime soon - if I was issued a Mini-14 and sent over there, I'd snatch up the first AK I came across.
Yep, all the Bermudans get is Mini-14s and Uzis. They also have to serve mandatory military service there and I believe they aren't allowed to posess firearms unless they're carrying their military issued minis while on duty. ####ty deal all-round if you ask me..

I honestly NEVER understood why people pay big money for mini 14's. I wouldn't own one even if it was GIVEN to me :shock: SO many better systems out there that accomplish the same thing in the same price range.
Anyone remember the A team? For whatever reason most of the A team had Colt SP1's, but Hannibal always had a stainless mini. Wonder how much of that show's operating budget was funded by Bill Ruger? :twisted:
Well for what it is worth, I have a SS Mini-14 HBAR that is just about as accurate as most AR's , "reiterate" HBAR meaning with a heavy barrel, bedded stock reworked trigger, scope and a few other mods. The stock Mini 14 barrel is the biggest downfall in the current design, other than that I consider the rifle more dependable than the AR because it is a more simple design and to boot it is NON-restricted. I payed less than half the price for the Mini-14 with all the bells & whistles ($2.2K) than I have into my AR ($5K), I can't hunt with the AR.
If Ruger came out with a factory HBAR they would have a winner, I understand they are considering that in the future.

It's not exactly "forced" military service, you can get out of it with a reasonable excuse, but there is indeed a "lottery" whereby the "winners" get to spend a few weeks in Warwick on training.
