Squeezed the trigger, weird pop, smoke out of the magwell. I think this may have fired out of battery. At least the day wasn't a total bust. After I verified everything was OK, I shot the best I have ever done.

I had my 597 back to warranty twice for multiple out of batterys. Then it went full auto on me. Lol. It was fun for a bit but 10 shots in a split second gets old fast. back to warranty again...

good ever since.

Jeepers! Glad you're all right. Gotta keep them semi-autos clean in the chamber area. I dun did some fiddlin' with my 597 tonight, installed VQ hammer and extractor, not that I had problems with the factory extractor but figured for the price eh why not? Got the trigger pull down to 2.5 lbs with supporting mods of over travel stop and sear spring adjustment screw :D I won't say what else I did cause' of liabilities an such but I reckon I should have 'er shootin' much better next time out.

While I do agree about the chamber, I don't think that was the issue in my case. I had recently did a very thorough cleaning in a quest to discover where my accuracy went from last year. Don't think there was a hundred rounds through it. I'd be very interested in your mods Rabid. If you can post that would be great. I'm also really curious about that "other" mod you did. Standing by for a PM!

I just wanted to verify that I do not have a VQ hammer. I know that there is a VQ extractor in there, but I'm just double checking.

Maybe a bad round with a bulge? Anyway link to all the info on 597 you could dream of http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=308031

Basically drilling through trigger assembly and installing set screws one to stop overtravel behind trigger one to adjust height of sear spring. Both mods need to be fine tuned with live fire to ensure reliable trigger reset. You have factory hammer I was only able to get mine down to 5-5.5lbs. Vq was 3.5lbs dropped in tweaked down to 2.5lbs with the adjustment screw mod

Yikes...freaky. I'd double/triple check that the chamber is clean, the bolt face is clean, extractors clear/unobstructed, etc.

Had a first myself last weekend shooting clays~a 20ga. target load (#7-1/2 Winchester White Box) in a Browning Citori didn't fire. (not my Citori~I wish!) I'd never seen that before, and I've been shooting clays on/off for over 30 years.

I did just that today (although I did fire a couple of mags after a quick clean-up and a check). Didn't find anything obvious, but I am going to look into checking the headspace.

The exact same thing happened to me with my 597 about two weeks ago. I was shooting Wildcat, put about 200 rounds through it that day before it happened. Only issue I've had with the rifle.

Had Similar issues with Izh35m pistol and Eley black box Match ammo. Rim blew off, along with extractor plunger and spring. .

Happened to two of us using the same model pistol and ammo at the range.

One thing I did notice when I did a very thorough cleaning, was that there was a slight buildup of crud below the guide rails at the front of the receiver. I think I'm going to experiment with a high quality dry lube for a bit and see what happens.
