@Scott: I don't remember that the course covered moving targets, but I think you'd simply guess how much to lead the target. It's a matter of training and experience.

@paulz: without the scope, it's really easy.
 
With 3 shot groups from a typical military rifle it would be inaccurate to use on any scope.

3 rounds at 25m is perfectly useable for finding poi. They sould be going into a ragged hole from even the crappiest gun. Firing more rounds is really just a waste of ammunition.
 
The other advantage to shooting the groups is that it leaves a record. If you have several optics to test, you have an automatic hard copy of the results.

If you are someone interested in precision, maintaining a record of everything you do with the gun is a worthwhile proposition. You could certainly write down the results with the boresighter, but if you are transcribing data for multiple optics, getting the actual hard copy of the results is more foolproof.

I would accept the results from a bore sighter, but would prefer the results from actually lobbing the bullets out there.
