Note the part where it is widely known to be "the worst machine gun ever fielded in the history of warfare". Apparently a common complaint was that it would get packed with dirt and/or sand... Fits this thread quite nicely...

I'm not interested in debating or nitpicking, I'm simply interested in correcting a false assumption.

Britain was France's mortal enemy for centuries and yet a British historian concedes that France has the record for being the most successful military power in European history. That counts for something.

It's a refurb. Allot of the ones I have at work are full of sand. Most of them have been sand blasted and re assembled. Are the guts of your bolt black? There should also be a couple of diamonds with a RNC stamped on your gun. These are the b grades brought in to canada by North Sylva through Molt and sometimes BNZ

If it were not for the heroism, sacrifice and bravery of the French army fighting a textbook rearguard action in Dunkirk, I don't think over 300, 000 Alllied soldiers would have escaped back to England. French "military failures" during WW2 were due to a few planners who put faith into the Maginot Line and assumed that the Ardennes forest was impassable for the German army.

maybe it was used in a desert war and mistakenly got put back in the "storage room" when it went to the factory for refurb. Someone probably mistakenly thought it had be refurbed and cosmoed and picked it up and into the vault it went. Maybe the refurb guys were unionized and there was a strike at the factory that day(JUST KIDDING)
 
That looks like the same material that came out of my motorcycle exhaust after I had them sand/bead blasted and ceramic coated.
My money is on a quick black bolt paint removal and hasty assembly without cleaning off the sand!
