Interesting Tactical .22LR rifles that aren't restricted?

Ruger SR22 would be the most interesting (non-res) in my books. Sadly, the most interesting ones ARE restricted....for some ridiculous reason.

That one looks pretty good (and yeah, the current regulations are beyond ridiculous).

Are higher capacity magazines available for the SR22?

fixed it for you...

Wasn't broken, but thanks. :) Figured I'd leave my fantasy American 180 out of this conversation.

High-cap mags~yes there are, but take a look through this forum....and you'll see plenty of threads about high-cap. mag problems for the 10/22. Threads about issues with the factory 10-round mags~not too many of those. Stick with the 10-rounders, or be prepared to gamble with the alternatives, and trouble-shoot the problems if/when they occur.

the Ruger bx25 mags are supposed to be as reliable as the Ruger 10 round rotary mags, not much reason to go for one of the third party ones as they are quite cheap too. unless you want a 50 round drum.

You have 4 options and 4 only.

RugeR sr22
Remington 597vtr
Mossberg 715t
Issc mkii

I recommend going with a regular ruger 10/22 and buy ar22 componantry from Nordic or T-22 Troy ind chassis. Remington, mossberg have quality issues IMO and the issc mkii I have heard is a crap shoot 50/50.

Yes the mossy is non reatricted. Any gun will have issues with the wrong ammo or loading the ammo wrong. I have the mossy and if you don't ride the bolt and find a ammo brand it like you'll be good to go. The basics are how much you want to spend?
The mossy is the cheapest but is plastic. Almost every gun is twice as expensive as the mossy because of materials. The basic 10/22 is $150- 250 but when you add a new trigger, barrel, aftmarket stock and rails, it can add up well over $900. It's even more expensive when you mod the sr-22 and the VTR. To the tune of $900-1200.
That's why I went with the mossy. It's got it all, just wish it was metal, had a different mag release and a proper charging handle. However for me saving $600+ was more important to me.
It all depends what you want and how much you want to spend.

Where did that info and assessment come from?
All I shoot are Butler Creek Steel Lips 25rnd Mags and guess what? They function Flawlessly.

Remington 597's are useless IMO and owners are stuck using the factory 10rnd mags b/c the guns are so fussy and unable to properly cycle.

50 rnds drums are available for Ruger 10/22's or SR22's and are NOT restricted or prhibited devices.

My advice; Ruger makes a very good semi-auto .22

I have to second that and more especially in my SR-22 as they sit very firmly in the mag well vs. my stock 10/22.

Too bad their prohib...........

why would they be prohibited? first i have heard of that.

Except they are not available :D

aww, why not? are the actually prohibited? i dont see how they could be, as 30 round and 50 round mags are here for that gun.

edit: OH its because those idiots packaged it as compatible with handguns. what a screw up. especially since the butler creeks are just as useable with handguns.

It all boils down to what the TS wants from his tactical 22.
Cheap plinking?- Mossy 702 Tactical
Best Restricted for the money? S&W M&P 15-22
Best Non-Restricted for the money? Ruger SR22
Best Overall? Tough category, but seeing as I've seen a lot of members with pictures of the Mossy, and a lot of OK reviews, I'd give it to the Mossy.

Also, if you're looking for a tactical 22 and you have a 5.56/.223 (and .308 in some cases) AR15, invest in a 22 conversion for your AR. Sure, I'll still make it restricted, but you'll save money in the long run.
