the Ruger bx25 mags are supposed to be as reliable as the Ruger 10 round rotary mags, not much reason to go for one of the third party ones as they are quite cheap too. unless you want a 50 round drum.

BX25 Mags are prohibited because they were advertised as being manufactured for the Charger pistol. If they came pinned to 10 they'd be legal.

Butler Creek steel lips feed fine in my SR22 with the right ammo. I use CCI mini-mags. Paint then solid black if you don't like the look...but leave the hot lips at the store for some chump to buy. Steel lips only.

I also have the Alangator tri-mags to hook 3 factory 10-round rotaries into one...combining the reliability of the factory with with high capacity. It's much easier to have that slung on your back than that big awkward BC mag.

Remington 597's are useless IMO and owners are stuck using the factory 10rnd mags b/c the guns are so fussy and unable to properly cycle.

I got my 597 for $100 in VG+ condition and I've never had a problem with it. The plastic 30 round magazines leave a lot to be desired, yes. But once I re-glued the seams of it where it rides in the magazine well, it's worked flawlessly for me.

The only thing you have to do to a Remington 597 is back out the guide rod retaining screws and put them in at a lower torque. They're a great little rifle and to be honest, I like my 597 better than I like the 10/22.

From what I've read above it seems like the majority opinion is that the SR-22 is the best bet, or an aftermarket kit built on the Ruger 10/22 platform.

You've obviously never heard of a krinker kit before.

I did not include this one. Most guys are usually looking for an M4/M16/AR clone or variant when they say "tacticool" in rimfire non restricted. Don't usually see many guys wanting the AK (not to say there isn't alot of them out there) but as you said is an excellent option.

Have you thought of a Ruger in a Marauder stock ?? I bought a Ruger 10-22 from Frontier and a Marauder stock from Jerry at Mystic precision ..It is a really good setup and both are great dealers.

This totally irked me when I found out a few weeks ago. Butler Creeks are legal and IIRC, just as compatible with the Charger but only because they don't advertise comparibility with the Charger. In the future, I think the best way to fight this ridiculous magazine cap BS is to exempt all rimfire guns first; illustrate that .22 LR is one of the weakest commercial cartridges and pose the least threat.

Bang for the buck, the ruger 10/22 with a kit & a .920 barrel is a good choice. With the right kit the 10/22 can be a lot lighter to carry than the SR22 & the build options for the 10/22 are endless.

Straight forward installation ( you tube is your friend) mine went together without any issues, its a good kit.
The kit changes the bolt release procedure as you just have to pull back on the bolt to release it..big improvement over original setup.
I went with a Bushnell TRS-25 .The original sights are not bad actually but they can be removed easily as well.
Highly recommend Mystic and Frontier has the best price and I received super fast shipping ,

High-cap mags~yes there are, but take a look through this forum....and you'll see plenty of threads about high-cap. mag problems for the 10/22. Threads about issues with the factory 10-round mags~not too many of those. Stick with the 10-rounders, or be prepared to gamble with the alternatives, and trouble-shoot the problems if/when they occur.

All I shoot are Butler Creek Steel Lips 25rnd Mags and guess what? They function Flawlessly.

50 rnds drums are available for Ruger 10/22's or SR22's and are NOT restricted or prhibited devices.

My advice; Ruger makes a very good semi-auto .22

Now, I'm the guy who started the "10/22s should have their own forum" thread, so maybe I'm a little worn-down by seeing so many "help me make my moderately accurate rifle shoot it's aftermarket mags well" threads.

I'm not that big of a kill-joy/fuddy-duddy...but based on the OP's initial question, I got the sense that he might appreciate a heads-up about mag issues that seem to be prevalent with the aftermarket stuff. We're not all tinkerers, prepared to work on/modify brand new guns to make them work well.

Moving forward, I think I'm going to avoid as many 10/22/"tactical" threads as possible. I initially SUGGESTED the SR22, so I'm no 10/22"hater" I'd actually like to own an SR22, but it would need to work well out of the box. I know...strange expectation for a $600 gun.

Bushnell scope, Harris 6-9" bipod with new swivel/ pivot mount. Still need to get more goodies from Iron Eagle Tactical. I also need to buy the extended mag release, auto action release (no I don't want to tinker with my gun as I know you can do this with a dremel), extended action bolt handle, .920 barrel (for weight) with compensator or flash hider (for looks only), foldable foregrip, additonal picitanny rails, brush gaurd, Single point sling and finally a Pro Mag 9/22 magazine and sleeve as I am not a fan of the banana clip. the pro mag gives it a more "tacticool" look.

avoid the mossy tactical, i had one and sold it. Just felt too cheap. And got gunked up after about 100 round causing around 2 jams per 25 round mag. The 25 round mags were loose when in the weapon.

My Marauder (now "Nomad") kit-equipped 10/22 is the coolest, most tactical- looking gun in my long gun collection! Open the door, 14 guns, this is the one that really grabs your eye. And it feels incredibly solid. Nothing cheap about it, anywhere, unlike some I've handled.
