Interesting video on M14-M16 transition

Look for a History Channel- Modern Marvels episode : The M15. Also talks about the transition to the M16. Contains old interviews with Stoner and such.

that was great to watch, especially the gradual 3d transition of m14 to m16 explainning Eugene Stoner's innovational approach was cool:popCorn:

I am sure that I saw one of those Vietnam era soldier with a bipod on his M16!!! Check at 5:12-22

I was under the impression that US soldier were taught to use the M14 only in semi-auto?

yes, that was a bi-pod on the m-16- they did have them- it was a metal snap on affair spring loaded - had a fancy little pouch for it too- the nylon ones came later
2) the majority of the m14s were semi-auto, however, there was a plastic baggie that contained a change lever and spring that was issued with each rifle- it was up to batt command to designate how the distribution was obtained- or so says my toe manual- it's SUPPOSED to be a ARMOURER LEVEL
conversion, however, anyone with a pin punch the right size and a hammer can do it in about a minute-

Not completely factually accurate, but still neat.

Gene Stoner had little if anything to do with the 5.56mm round, he told me that himself in 1993. In fact he was much happier with the SR-25 using 7.62 NATO, he didn't rate 5.56mm.

Also there are plenty of people still walking around who've been hit with 5.56mm. There was a Gurkha who took seven rounds from an Indonesian AR-15 in Borneo and lived to tell about it, and he carried on in the Army too.

Not that I recommend shooting yourself seven times in order to find out, mind you.

My GF had to tell me to calm down when he said "the failure of the M14, it was time for a new designer.........".

Gaa.......how did it fail!?!? It didn't. The army's requirements changed! It just pisses me off that they almost spread misinformation......

lol......yeesh.

Bitterman

PS - love my AR too.....

Anyone who believe the M14 was a failure should prove their point by standing in front of one being shot! I consider it one of the best rifles the US Miltary was ever issued. Shame it didn't come into service in 1939!

the reason it was considered a failure was that it didn't do so well on full auto, mostly because of the inaccuracy and the 20 round mag was gone too quickly- this thing was envisioned with giving the average soldier BOTH pin-point rifle accuracy AND light machine gun capability - they even went so far as to redesign the stock and add a heavy barrel for the full auto- and full auto WOULD crack and BREAK receivers - if i recall , there were also some ( think it was winchester) receivers that were prone to breaking right out of the factory-- granted , it's a SUPERB semi-auto rifle- esp when scoped and tricked out- like the m21-m25 series, but in it's fulfullment of the concept it was a failure- incidentally, i know a few guys in the states that have class 3 m14s( f/a) and they claim it's no worse than any of the other lmgs at the time, such as our venerable c2- pr g3, provided you stick to 3-5 shot bursts, where the accuracy drops off is the 20 shot full mag, quick change stuff- considering that even the m-60 has to have a barrel change evey 200 rounds. or so says the manual

Hey,
If i was you guys I would think again...we only have 5 rounds....teach them soldier how to shoot...with 20 rounds you can kill 20 ppl or 21...the bullet might keep going...lol never know.
