interesting visit to Hamilton Central police station to look at a few amnesty guns

THANK GOD the press is on the side of common sense for once. HOW DARE THEY deprive this country of relics that need to be on display in a legitimate museum? For what? Their ego?

As much as I have those F_cktards on the Hamilton Police Force, maybe they'd change their tune if the feds paid fair dollar for the worth of these relics, all proceeds go to their annual Police Ball or whatever it would take to bribe these morally corrupt extortionists in uniform.

"The people of Hamilton have an intolerance for gun violence," Leendertse said. "If we save one life, that's worth more than any history."

I give up.....

I simply F^%&$# give up trying to find a reporter who will be the voice of reason and ask the right questions of bureaucrats like this character. If we elected our Police Chiefs and Judges like they do in the U.S., out of touch self centric power brokers like this twit, wouldn't even make it to the ballot box.

160,000 people in Ontario alone, died last year due to cigarette smoke, direct and second hand.

Why is nobody writing letters demanding an outright ban on the sale and use of this product. The answer is because the government is complicit in their deaths and actually makes money from those deaths through taxes.

.... and this F&^^%$ idiot wants to destroy elements of our heritage on the premise that taking a 200 year old flintlock off the street might save one life, yet he supports kids carrying knives to school because it's part of some primitive religious practice .

I'm done.... and it won't belong before I'm out of this country, retired in AZ. Unfortunately, I'll be leaving you guys to sit in this toilet that used to be a country I served for 17 years and was proud of.

<Rant Off>

Regards,
Badger

there are grumblings from some of the former owners wanting some stuff back also saying that they didn't know about being able to donate to museums .I don't think I will be invited back to the police station anytime soon .we'll see what happens

Write the reporter and the editor. They read their correspondence.

The "amnesty" the police have set up is a procedure for simultaneously ripping off old people and destroying historical artifacts. It is anti-gun hysteria, grand-standing and a fraud committed on old people.

And any money gleaned from the sale of these items shouldn't go to their G*d damned police ball, it should go to the unimformed owners who didn't know any better (that they could have taken the guns in to a dealer for sale) and got suckered into surrendering them for destruction.

"Save one life" my ass. This parasite is simply trying to promote his own career.

I wonder if the amnesty was properly authorized. Doesn't the federal Minister of Justice have the authority to declare an amnesty? Is he aware of how these fools have perverted that concept?

That's not what police chief said in his email!!! He said that those, who turned in the guns knew that they could donate and it was their free choice... pants on fire!

interesting eh! I wonder if the officer going to pick up firearms said to each owner "you know you could donate this to a museum and get a tax receipt" I highly doubt it probably said nothing but thank you .

I have just read the article “Canadian War Museum gunning for vintage musket” by Paul Morse of the Hamilton Spectator (Apr 6, 2006)

I am shocked that the Deputy Chief Ken Leendertse is so insensitive to importance of history and heritage that his department would knowingly destroy valuable artefacts. He is quoted as saying:
"The people of Hamilton have an intolerance for gun violence," Leendertse said. "If we save one life, that's worth more than any history."
Does this mean that firearms under the control of the police department are a life threatening risk to the public, in that case perhaps they police should also surrender their sidearms!
Perhaps the Police chief can also point out the last time a store was robbed with a 100 year old black powder musket?
The talk about the “contract” shows just how short sighted the police are, they could easily put a clause in that any firearms of historical significance would be offered to a museum before being destroyed.
These gun amnesties rarely bring in the type of firearms responsible for the majority of shooting, because it is highly unlikely that gang members will surrender their guns willingly. They also rob families and old surviving spouses of income that could be made by selling the valuable antiques to a registered firearm dealer.
The police have handled this affair with the grace of the Keystone cops and the victims of their ineptness are the previous owners who have been conned out of money by authorities and the Canadian Public who are being robbed of our heritage.

Your Lordship,

I would like to simply take a moment of your time to address the issue of the Hamilton Police Forces seemingly unyielding attitude towards the destruction of all of the firearms, in totality, that were handed in during the recent amnesty run in your fine City.

......

As an enthusiast of history it shocks me to hear that there are no proposed exemptions for saving some of the truly rare and unique firearms which have been turned in. I can appreciate that there is a desire to 'cut down of crime', but melting down nearly 200 or 300 year old muzzle-loading firearms seems to go beyond crime control, and instead into destruction of relevant historical objects.

I previously volunteered my time in Nova Scotia with a historical group associated with the Province of Nova Scotia, as a conservator and librarian. As such Sir, I can assure you I have come to understand and appreciate the value of such rare items, such as a few the Hamilton Police Department seem unwilling to save. I would only ask that in the name of historical preservation and respect for our Canadian history, that the elected officials of Hamilton help to preserve these historical pieces, if or when a group or museum offers to take them into their historical care.

Many Kind Thanks

I can only hope a Legion Branch were to come forward. Even deactivated some of these could still be given a good home in a Legion...

I have just been informed that the Hamilton police WILL be revisiting the owners of some of the more historically signifigant arms and asking them to if they would like to ammend thier contract with the Hamilton Police and donate thier firearms.

Nice reply from the Mayors office, and another from the Police. I am hoping that this is all part of a realisation that we treat Canadian history a little flippantly at times.

The Hamilton Spectator posted a picture of some of the seized handguns.
About a third of them were pellet guns from what I could see.
If that's the best they could come up with for a photo op, you have to wonder how significant the numbers really are.

The only reason the police are backing off is that they are being shown up in the press as BLOODY IDIOTS!!!!!!!!! I guarentee if this had not been made public EVERYTHING would have been destroyed.

I must agree if they hadn't shown me the brown bess it would have been destroyed .I think that the reporter had some incling of it'sor at least some of the guns maybe not that specific guns importance and just needed some verifacation .they weren't going to let us see anything at first because we missed the photo op but he pushed them to show us something so my hat off to Paul Morris for his persaverance (sp)

Way to go Mark!

Too bad for the Police department where they thought they had a delicious public relations and photo op dream, turn into a frickin' nightmare for them!!!!:D :D :D AHHWWW too bad for them, not as smart as they thought were! Looks good on them.
