Your Lordship,
I would like to simply take a moment of your time to address the issue of the Hamilton Police Forces seemingly unyielding attitude towards the destruction of all of the firearms, in totality, that were handed in during the recent amnesty run in your fine City.
......
As an enthusiast of history it shocks me to hear that there are no proposed exemptions for saving some of the truly rare and unique firearms which have been turned in. I can appreciate that there is a desire to 'cut down of crime', but melting down nearly 200 or 300 year old muzzle-loading firearms seems to go beyond crime control, and instead into destruction of relevant historical objects.
I previously volunteered my time in Nova Scotia with a historical group associated with the Province of Nova Scotia, as a conservator and librarian. As such Sir, I can assure you I have come to understand and appreciate the value of such rare items, such as a few the Hamilton Police Department seem unwilling to save. I would only ask that in the name of historical preservation and respect for our Canadian history, that the elected officials of Hamilton help to preserve these historical pieces, if or when a group or museum offers to take them into their historical care.
Many Kind Thanks
