Hello Gents,

Presently I own a 308win and 22mag. I am thinking of picking something up as a bridge between these two cartridges. The idea being something to go after things like Coyotes. I live in SW Ont so I cannot use the 308 as it is greater than the arbitrarily chosen 275 limit. I have heard a few good arguments for a 6.5swede but it seems like a little to much horsepower for racoons and yotes.

Thoughts?

I am not too familiar with the rules there are you looking for a deer varmint combo to replace your 308 or a dedicated varmint gun.

A varmint gun starts at 22 hornet toping out at about 243 (argueably) with at least 10-15 steps in between.

The nice thing about the 6.5 swede or 260Rem is the great bullet selection available.
Both will do anything any of the 257, 243 or some larger calibres will do and with similar bullet weights.
The next logical choice would be a 223Rem for many of the same reasons as above. The rifles are also more available as they are made by every good gunmaker in the world, includeing the custom makers.
The 223 also has the advantage of usually being extremely accurate and there are a lot of used but serviceable and accurate rifles on the market.

Do you need factory ammo available, or are you a handloader?

If the former, then the 6.5's would be a ####ty choice due to lack of varmint loaded factory ammo 243 or 25-06 etc are FAR more sensible choices. Given that you already have a big game gun, you could get a dedicated varmint gun shooting the 204, 223, 22-250 or the like
If the latter, then the world's your oyster. Buy whatever you like, or concoct some varmint loads for your 308. The 125 grain Speer TNT is a wicked accurate bullet, though admittedly overkill for varmint work

.243, some hunt deer with it, but i'd prefer a 25-06....

if your hunting strictly coyote, and not deer, why not convince the missus for a .223 WSM? A pure laser!

Buy the Swede... load up on Igman surplus

Keep the .22 mag for coons etc..

Trade the .308 in on a Marlin Guide gun in 45/70

With that combo - your're good for anything you may encounter!!

keep the .308, good all around, moose, bear, deer caliber.

.22mag is grea for the small stuff

I'd add a .223 or .22-250 to thagt collection for coyotes and larger varmits

would round out the collection nicely.

"...What on earth is that all about..." Some municipalities in Southern Ontario, mostly in southwestern Ontario, have a calibre restriction. By the name of the cartridge. No centre fire over .275 calibre. The .270 Win is ok(despite its .277" bullet), but a .280 Remington is not. If anybody had a rifle in .276 Pedersen, that wouldn't be allowed either.
It doesn't make any sense to those of us who live here either. Except that you can't look in any direction without there being some kind of building within a few hundred yards. Rumour has it that it was put in place after W.W. I to keep hunters from using surplus .303's.

I think you need to get at least 2 more :D A .22 centerfire, (.222, .223, .22-250) and then you need a 6.5x55 or a .260 ;) There is a lot of ground to cover between your .22 and the .308. You couldn't possibly do it with one rifle.
