Well if you roll yer own it is really hard to beat the .260 Rem, with either the 95 Vmax or the 100 Bt in a 22" tube 3300 fps is no problem with a few powders keeping pressures sane. It will cut yotes in half as far as you can hit them and doubles the range of a 223. Coons would be just a red mist and flying chunks of meat. It would also give you a cartridge that is just about perfect if you hunt deer. The right amount of speed, power and penetration combined with light recoil. If you don't reload the .223 is probably the cheapest cartridge to feed that will do what you want to do with the 22-250 second and the orignal deathray the .220 swift coming in in third place.

It's a great cartridge and I have 2 rifles a Ruger MkII and a BLR81.
I was trying 100gr silvertips when I can find them in factory ammo and last weekend at a gun show I picked up 200, 100gr silvertips. now I can work up a load for my Ruger. I'm going to try H4350.

Love my 223. Just something about a 22 centrefire that grabs me. Also like that the recoil is low enough that you can see the kill(or not) in the scope.
223 rules. Also big advantage is there is a huge amount of cheap brass for the 223 so it is real cheap to load. My $0.02

There seems to be an aweful lot of votes for the 6.5swede. Unfortunately that opens up an entirely new debate about whether to by a surplus rifle from Tradex or a brand new Tikka.

Well - I go after coyotes with a 6.5X55. Heres some considerations

- your not likely to get a shot less than 200 y, so accuracy is a big consideration.
- detachable mag is a nice convenience.
- Tikka has a longer twist than the Swedish 96 based rifles.
- non-wood stock may benefit "as-received" performance.

I have several 6.5's - Ruger, Tikka 695, Epps 96 based sporter, Tradex sporter, etc. In the end I went for the Tikka. (The Tradex rifle would have been a poor choice owing to the warped stock....)
