Introductory Hunting Rifle

Given your current financial restrictions I would say a remington 783 in 308 is your best bang for buck hunting rifle. The reason for 308 over 270 is simple due to resale value in the future. A 308 is an easier sell from my experience. I would then watch the EE closely and pick up a Leupold Vx2 or better scope. Maybe even a Bushnell Elite series if the price is right. In a few years you can always buy a "better" hunting rifle and swap the scope over if you feel like it. With proper care/maintenance I think a 783 should last a life time.

aaah, yeah, tradex, I bought once and cried once. The firing pin released and fired on bolt closing. Simply dangerous. Sear must have been tinkered with or worn our. I didn't find out. I returned it to tradex and ate the $50 shipping cost.

There are decent combo packages under $1000. The Rem 783, Win XPR and Ruger American. I've had a 783 and have an XPR. They both shoot well. I did a DIY bedding job on the XPR (6.5 Creedmoor) and with my handloads is honestly the most accurate and consistent rifle in my locker! Many Creeds shoot well as the cartridge is inherently accurate and is adequate for deer to moose (within reasonable ranges). But your choice of 308 and 270 are also very good and tend to be inherently accurate. Assuming you are using factory ammo, you'll want to buy various different types of ammo to see what works well in your rifle. Got to like these decisions!
