iPad or Tablet...for IPSC scoring.

We are on our third year using practiscore at our local matches for scoring. Now we use match management for registering, payment and squadding. We save a bunch of time. Id recommend a Galaxy tablet or any reputable brand with a good case. Ideally, 1 tablet per stage is the only way to go. My advice, run all the tablets on a secure wifi to prevent an external device from changing the score.

You can't change scores using external devices, unless those scores will be explicitly pulled in by MD or stats officer. For that reason it is a good idea to always name your tablets according to stages and lock their IP address on WIFI hotspot, so device sync codes won't change. Also see this for other best practices http://www.nroi-canada.org/wp/2016/09/13/practiscore/

My comment was not at all meant to be a shot at practiscore, we have androids because they were the most cost effective option for scoring our 3 gun matches with PS. Now that we can't shoot 3 gun we are doing PRS.

I don't find PS hard to use on android, I am just not very familiar with the OS.

Wasn't taken as a shot. I just tried to explain how things work. There are lot of issues and todo items and they need to be somehow prioritized. When there are no requests on specific ones, they could be bumped down into the queue for one reason or another.

I am personally not familiar with PRS and haven't seen anyone in Ontario shooting it, even more the rifle competitions I've seen and those are run by ORA are way different from PRS their scoring makes somewhat more sense to me. So, it will be done kinda like "copy from ios app" and hope it works the same... not really my favorite way of doing things. :)

This Portable Wifi is really handy -

Compact, Battery powered, charge lasts all day and more. The Galaxy's find it pretty quick too.
(Credit to the guys in BC, they tipped me off to it!)

Ours just arrived today - very slick! Will be nice to pull down the scores to the master tablet during the match (great back-up) as well as sync all of the scores at the range at the end of the day. Thanks again.

Can confirm. PS is great, just not so great for PRS on android.

Maybe once they roll out an updated version for Android.

Maybe when "they" receive some emails about it, "they" may prioretize prs some more...

This is the first time I hear prs is shot in Canada. If someone is doing it somewhere in Ontario, make sure to let "them" know.

PS is quite good for scoring matches. We've been using it for the last 4 or 5 matches and it's been mostly trouble free. Once the match starts, syncing regularly is important. We use a combination of ipads and galaxy tabs, mainly as I have an ipad with cell service that can pull down the match and be on-line if needed. It also acts as a wifi hot spot for the sync network.

Would suggest you run a coiuple of practise matches before a real one to get up to speed on some of the more involved things. Things like adding new shooters, changing squads, recording the score on the wrong shooter, some of these can cause grief if not done right.

Read the PS notes, they are quite helpful. For the first match or 2 maybe have a simple paper score sheet to use as a backup, just in case. Make sure you have lots of large zip lock baggies in case it rains. Make sure you have a charging source, as iPads will run low on battery if running them all day. It's kinda nice the way you can define the match and stages on the ipsc website, then dld the match to PS. Upload is pretty easy too.

Mostly, take your time and practise before you have to score the first match.

You're welcome. :)
But remember, the current BoD doesn't have anything to do with that... actually the opposite. So, cast your vote accordingly.

PS: it is been referring to the IPSC Ontario web site

Why, we always just sync after the match is finished, then upload the results.

You can do that too. But if anything goes wrong and device gets destroyed or someone accidentally does a factory reset on it, you'll lose scores.

PS: for that reason android app has an option to write all scores in a text format to an SD card. That is if your device has an SD card slot

So, I still haven't seen any emails about PRS support for android... Does that mean no one is interested/needed in it?

There is about 3..4 PRS matches a months in the match results posted on practiscore web site and I couldn't identify any canadian ones. Doesn't seem like a very active/popular competitions...

Does any one print out a copy of the results for the shooter immediately after the scores have been entered? I have heard that this may be the case. I suppose the intent is to give the shooter some sort of comfort that his information won't be lost or changed. If anyone is dong this, I am interested to hear about the logistics and what sort of printer they are using.

I have a couple of the new $50 Nook 7" tablets on order that we're going to try out. I will let y'all know my experiences once I get them. It was a bit of a pain to get them as Barnes & Noble doesn't want to ship them to Canada.

Is anyone using battery powered routers here? I'm looking at the TP-LINK TL-MR3040 as a possible solution.
