IPSC 1911 Question

Will a full size 1911 in 40 S&W with a 10 rd Metalform magazine fit into THE IPSC BOX?

Thanks, Jay

My full size Trojan 1911 in 9mm with an Ed Brown mag well fits into the box with a Wilson Combat 10 round mag inserted. Not sure what your measurements are but here is the criteria I used for the Classic Division...

A handgun in its ready condition, but unloaded and with an empty magazine inserted, must fit wholly within the confines of a box which has internal dimensions of 225mm x 150mm x 45 mm (tolerance of +1 mm, -0 mm). Note that all magazines must comply.

The handgun is placed inside the box with the barrel parallel to the longest side of the box. Rear adjustable sights may be slightly depressed during insertion.

cbabes - That's THE IPSC BOX I'm talking about. It's good to know that a 1911 9mm with a 10 rd mag fits into it. The question is will the 1911 in 40 S&W w/ 10 rd mag also fit?

Interesting, never knew this

So I guess a Beretta 92fs would fit just fine and is acceptable

92fs doesn't have to fit in the box unless you are going to shoot it in Standard Division. Production Division guns are approved specifically to make and model and since you can't add parts like magwells they don't have to be tested.

Which division and power factor? The reason I ask is if you are planning on shooting classic division in major with your 40S&W, you will be limited to 8 rd magazines. Fitting in the box won't be the limiting factor.

19. Magazines accessible to a competitor during a COF must not contain more than 8 rounds (for Major power factor) or 10 rounds (for Minor power factor) at the Start Signal.

I don't think that classic division has a box fitting requirement?

Here is an overview of the Classic rules....

Classic division was approved as a class in IPSC at the General Assembly held in October just before the
World Shoot and will join Open, Standard and Production classes from 1 January 2012.
The really short description is:
1911 type all-metal single-stack pistols only, max 8 rounds in magazine for major, max 10 rounds in
magazine for minor, no optics, no comps, no weights, no slide lightening, no weak-hand thumb rests, no
extended dust-cover frames. Magazine wells may not be more than 35mm wide. Holster rules are the
same as Standard gun. Bull barrels allowed. You can change sights and grips.
The full list of formal rules (as approved) is:

14. A handgun in its ready condition (see Section 8.1), but unloaded and with an empty magazine
inserted, must fit wholly within the confines of a box which has internal dimensions of 225mm x 150mm
x 45 mm (tolerance of +1 mm, -0 mm).
Note that all magazines must comply.
15. The handgun is placed inside the box with the barrel parallel to the longest side of the box. Rear
adjustable sights may be slightly depressed during insertion. 16. Handguns must be based on and visibly resemble the classic 1911-genre design. This means a single-stack, one piece metal frame, and a dust cover (without an accessory rail) which has a maximum length of 75mm when measured from the leading edge of the dust cover to the rear of the slide stop pin.
Magazine well openings cannot exceed a maximum outside width of 35mm. Compliance is checked by
way of a 35mm wide, and at least 5mm deep, notch carved into the outside of the box, or by use of a
ruler or caliper, as approved by the officiating Range Master.
17 Prohibited modifications are slide lightening cuts, weak hand thumb rests and slide rackers.
18. Permitted modifications are those of a cosmetic nature (e.g. custom grip panels, scrimshaw or
similar surface engravings, checkering or serrations etc.), replacement single or ambidextrous thumb
safeties, and any open sights (which may be embedded into the slide).
19. Magazines accessible to a competitor during a COF must not contain more than 8 rounds (for Major
power factor) or 10 rounds (for Minor power factor) at the Start Signal.
