IPSC and gun clubs

Hey guys,

Looking to get into IPSC. Read through some of the IPSC newbie threads and got some great advice...its all about being safe and having FUN FUN FUN.

Quick logistic question though. Anyone here shoot IPSC but does NOT belong to a club that offers IPSC shooting. My club offers bullseye and cowboy action but no IPSC. Curious how you guys go about practicing for matches. Easy if your club offers IPSC but closest one to me is over an hour away.

Many of the skills you need to be proficient at for IPSC can be practiced in your home.
Draw to target, reloads, moving into and out of positions, reloads, dropping to a knees quickly, reloads, prone, did I mention reloads?

Then you practice on your accuracy at the range.
Pull it all together at a practice night at a club that allows non member walk ons, and you are pretty prepped for a match.
You just have to get creative in your practice.

If you want to advance, dry fire is key regardless of how close you are to a range with an action shooting bay.

Plenty of books and videos out there to help with efficient dry fire practice.
 
"...is over an hour away..." It's a case of if you want to play and you have to drive an hour, that's what you have to do. There are lots of clubs that do not have the facilities for shooting games and shooters can and will drive an hour to play.
Where are you? Maybe somebody knows of some place closer.
"...did I mention reloads?..." What? snicker. If you're going to do that in the house make sure you make some DP rounds too.
"...dry fire is key regardless..." Of what kind of shooting you do. It's a very long used training technique in all shooting sports except .22's. Kind of fun by itself too.
 
My nearest club that offers IPSC is about a 40 minute drive away, and through traffic, my willingness to get to the range is sometimes lacking. That means I try to practice as much of the non-live fire stuff as I can at home. Draws, dry firing, reloads, etc.

I try to mix exercises together; draw while moving, index on some target (usually a post it note stuck to the wall) and then dry fire, or dry fire, reload while moving over a couple of steps and then index on some target.

Alex S once told me that IPSC is really a bunch of individual skills to master; a match is really about just putting those skills together in the most efficient way that you can.
 
I belong to MHRRC which does not offer IPSC. They do hold club "IPSC" style matches, which are similar but there is a greater variety in targets and a much simpler scoring system. As far as practicing, there is no problem. There are several IPSC/IDPA shooters in the club. As long as we have our own targets or arrange to borrow the clubs targets we can do pretty much anything we need to do. The club has a 75m range that is wide open so can set up targets anyway you want as long as it is safe.
 
You can achieve an amazing amount with good, consistent dry fire practice on a regular basis.
My range also does not have IPSC yet, just Bullseye.
Understand where you're coming from.
 
I am moving in a few days to a range 5 mins away from my house with the nearest IPSC range 1hrs 20 mins to me. I've contacted the range 5 mins away to start a handgun club myself. Sounds like they will allow it!!! Someone has to be the first to set this stuff up. I will travel for matches.
 
Thanks for the input guys. Never really thought about doing the dry fire practices at home but it makes sense. My non-gun buddies think I am nutz for walking around my house wearing a holster and gun but now I suppose I'll be a nut "in training". Maybe after I get some IPSC shooting experience under my belt I will try to get IPSC started at my own range. Right now it's dominated by old school shooters who love their 1911s and revolvers. Nothing wrong with that (they are beautiful guns) but there's only so much punching holes through a paper target I can take before I develop ADD. Cheers!

If you think about it, IPSC is not much more than punching holes in paper too (and knocking down of steel). It's the stuff that's done between the hole punching that makes it different.
 
I want to get back to IPSC as well and i'm pretty much in the same situation as you. When I did IPSC the first time, I did just as many guys said here: dry fire practice, reloads, reloads, reloads, etc, etc, etc. Well, on my first match i didn't do too bad for a first timer (well as I remember it anyway !! )

So, I'm on my way to get back to that home practice again ! :)
