ipsc caliber

I would say 45 because if you shoot with a larger calliber (45) you get a major factor. And guys who shoot to win like to have a major factor on their side.( you will gain more points ) and another bonus is with 45 you can see your holes and you will know were to re shoot if you want (constock only)....

my cents

DanTorz, do you even shoot IPSC? Kel asked about the most common caliber in IPSC, and you said .45?????

Open: .38 Super, extra pressure for comp
Standard: .40S&W, cheap brass and generally "smaller" size pistol then .45.
Production: 9mm, easily make minor without having to worry about reloading.

Bookworm, where do you get the info that .45 is still the most common caliber????

Don't get me wrong, I love shooting .45 but just not for IPSC. :)

Sorry people but everyone I know aside from a few shoot 45's and have for quite some time. Yep there are a lot of people with the fancy race guns in other calibers but the run of the mill shooter is still banging away with 45's. Coarse then I ain't a pro, just a everyday shooter who does it just for fun.

I got my first pistol in .45ACP because I didn't know better. It is a great caliber and all is fine, except that I gotta bend and pick the brass whenever I shoot and loading it is more expensive.
All depends, I guess how much someone shoots.
If it is only 1000-2000 a year, caliber doesn't mather, however more then 5000 I will go with .40 S&W.
Few priced to compare:
.45ACP
brass - 100 bucks for 1000 cases one time fired
bullets - 120 bucks and up for jacketed (200gr)
.40 S&W
brass - most of the guys get it free, however buing is not expensive, around 30-40 bucks/1000
bullets - 90 bucks/1000

Loading about same

So, 1000 rounds for .45ACP will cost you about 80 bucks more then .40 S&W,
when you shoot in ,000's just imagine the savings???

Ok, can't argue with that - he's just stating personal experience.

In my opinion, the question is largely meaningless. it's like asking "what cars are more popular in car racing?" without specifying F1, or NASCAR, or whatever. In ipsc, specify which division you're thinking about, to make the answer meanginful.

in Open division, some form of .38 supra is the most popular. In production, it's 9mm; in Std you'll see .40S&W, .45ACP, and some 9mm with the last being the least popular. Which of .40 vs .45 is used by more Std shooters across the country, I guess it would be hard to say. Oldtimers will probably stick to .45, those newer will probably go straight to .40.

From a survey conducted at 2004 USPSA Nationals:
493 people responded to the survey

Limited Division - 95% .40cal
Production Div - 70% 9mm, 20% .40cal
Open - 41% .38Super, 40% .38SuperComp, 6.5% 9x19Major
Revolver - almost everyone shot a S&W .45ACP

Based on brass pick-up after the ON provincials last year... 9 mm and 40 are pretty close to even split. Everything else added to together doesn't quite add up to the number of either one.
