A few of the guys from the local IPSC league are suggesting that i should join them but i don't know many of the details . I'm willing the do the Black Badge course but not willing to get into an arms or gear race . I have a hip holster and an inside the waistband holster for my .45 and i only shoot full house loads . Naturally , i don't expect to win anything but it looks like a fun day of shooting . I don't care about divisions or classes so can i get in with what i have ? I'm not buying a fancy quick draw holster or fancy sights or down loading . My IWB holster doesn't have a thumbsnap but it's very secure while my hip holster does have a thumbsnap .

Yes, you can get in with what you have. You may need more magazines and a few more magazine pouches (or a few magazine pouches, because it sounds like you have none)

I guess you would be in Standard division. The gear doesn't help as much as people think; It is more practice. I shoot factory ammo. It is about having fun shooting, almost like a video game, but a lot more exciting and challenging. You are really only competing against yourself. Don't expect to come in first place (for the record, I never have), but that doesn't stop me, and it shouldn't stop you. Have fun.

One of the neat things about IPSC shooting is the final score is broken down into the shooter with the most points is given 100% and if you have half as many points you get 50%. So if most of the same shooters are at the next match you can look at your percentage and see if there is a trend of improvement. example 1st match 39% , 2nd match 42% and on and on . There will be a match were something goes wrong but you will know which stage the foul up was on. GO FOR IT , IT'S A LOT OF FUN.

Take your Black Badge and start practicing!

Generally you will need.
A center fire handgun; 9mm or larger caliber.
A holster that protects the trigger guard of the gun.
3-4 magazines or speed loaders and pouches to hold them securely.
Approximately 500 rounds of ammunition.
Eye and ear protection.

It is hard to beat IPSC for shooting fun and learning how to safely handle your firearms. Great bunch of people and IMHO the most fun you can have!

You don't worry about competing just play safe and have fun! Way, way too much fun.

Not quite true. Whoever has the best 'hit factor' (score minus penalties divided by time) gets 100%. If your hit factor is half of that person's then you get 50%........

From the sounds of it, you are most of the way there. A said, mags and pouches are all you need.

I suggest that you don't use the IWB holster.

Good luck and have FUN.

RePete.

I don't think a correction of the scoring was really neccessary in this post at this time of this new guys intentions to join ipsc.

yes , you'r fine, just join & have a blast ! as mentioned, you'll need at least 5 mags. no less. & pouches to hold them in a ready position.
I don't think the IWB hoster is allowed, but I may be wrong. the other one should be fine, as long as it has enough tension to keep gun from falling out if turned upside down & given a slight shake .

Any modifications that will help performance, you can either do slow at your pace or never if so desired.

Hope you join & Have fun :)

Thanks guys , looks like i'm almost good to go . I have 4 mags , maybe i'll get a couple more and no mag pouches but i can fix that fast .

So I'm guessing that you don't see a need to base your decisions on accurate information.......misinformation will do

its my sport, and when i got into ipsc i really did get to see how much of a sport i can be.
1911 is a good gun for ipsc, id say 1/2 the people shooting ipsc use one.
But i hope you reload as you will shoot alot off ammo.

Are the Wiley-X's acceptable for competition?

Dragoon,

Before you go off on colt45gunner take a look at BEARMAN's original post...

BEARMAN makes no reference to stage scores.

Final scores (or Overall Match Score as it is normally refered to) is indeed a total of all stage points.

He with the most stage points at the end of the match is the Overall Match Winner.

And yes, I agree with you and Quigley, if BEARMAN were refering to stage score only, your explaination would prevail.

But, if the match was a possible 1200 point match, the Overall Match would show the competitor with the most stage points, say 1000pts. as the Match Winner. If a competitor had 500pts, his percentage would indeed be 50%.

There is nowhere on the Overall results that shows the sum of Hit Factors.

Therefore, BEARMAN post was quite accurate as presented.

Cheers.

ATR ignore the above pissing about and go shoot and have fun. but be warned you will likely get caught up in the fun of it. Hope to see you at a match and see how you're doing. Keep us appraised on how your first time out goes.

atr, go for it. When I started shooting IPSC I used a 1911 Remington Rand (chromed and built about 1942) out of an uncle mike’s holster, 7 round GI mags, uncle mike's mag holders and my belt on my jeans. Did I win anything? Nope. Did I have fun…OH YEA!!!!!!!

Of course what happens with a lot of us is we get bit by the competition bug. We want to start off by going faster (originally it use to be joked I “dropped” one cause I had a C.) Then we want to win our class. Then we want to move up in class. Each of these decisions then requires you purchase better equipment.

IPSC is fun and addicting. You have been warned :}}}}}}

yes. The are impact resistant. I actually see them in a lot of motorcycle shops, as a lot of bikers wear them as they are very comfortable and can stop a rock from entering your eyeball.
I use them when I drive because they are good to eliminate glare. (i get headaches from glare). They look cool as well, and that is the most important thing  :D LOL

Thanx for watching my back 2filthy.

Dragoon: It's not that I think he should have misinformation,
but just simply too much info that he doesn't need, he just wanted to know about the sport & if he was good to go w/ his gear.
His post said, he didn't want to be competitive anyways. I really don't think he would have gone 2 years of not knowing how the scoring went, without your detailed correction.
And I probably don't need to be posting this either.

Let's go to the club & put some lead down range :)
