IPSC Classic Minor, 9mm vs 40

40 minor. on top of getting a nice and mellow recoil pulse, you still have a gun for major in the standard class if ever you want to shoot against the king pins loll..

I shoot my glock 35 with minor loads, very happy with the result. It's important to replace the recoil spring when you do this, for reliability and to reduce the effect of the slide moving forward and pushing the muzzle down. I have a 13lb spring on a stainless rod, and each shot barely breaks my sight picture if I do it right. Keep in mind:
124 gr 9mm projectile at 1010 fps (+125k PF) = 280 ft.lb of muzzle energy
180 gr .40 projectile at 700 fps (+125k PF) = 195 ft.lb of muzzle energy

Depending on your total setup, you can achieve a 30% reduction in recoil by going with .40 minor, plus you can swap your recoil spring and shoot factory or go right to major. Of course, this requires some experimenting to achieve a reliable and accurate load. My current load is 165gr campro on 3.6gr of titegroup (800fps). Bit of a kick, feels natural, recoils like a 9mm.

tripp research 10mm 10rd, they ship to canada

theres some custom work to improve the feeding you can get. i forgot the name of the company that does it, u can ask them to get the work done before they ship it to you

definitely 40 because you have the ability to pick your poison on who you shoot against. In out club I am always shooting against a 9 guy and some days I wish I could shoot minor loads against him. The wife's gun I specifically got in 40 so she can shoot minor and if I want to play I can shoot major with it

Has anyone found a reliable 10 round mag for the 1911 in 40 S&W? If so please advise as I am looking to switch to minor.

Thanks

The Tripp System mag is good, but there are still 3 major variables to make this work: gun, mag, bullet

Just because the mag is good does not mean things will work right out of the box.

Getting this configuration working reliably and fitting into the IPSC box is doable, but non-trivial to accomplish.

You definitely need to confirm the system mags fit in the IPSC box when inserted into the gun. I had to do some additional grinding on the basepads. Nose diving can also be a problem.

Agreed!

+1 on the EGW mag catch. I found that playing with the cartridge overall length was the only other option. To get the system mags to take 10 rounds you only have one follower option.
I found that round nose profile bullets also helped.
You can always try the brute force approach and try heavier recoil spring but that has other consequences.

I found my guns liked shorter lengths which is unusual from what I have read.

It takes some time and trial and error.

I'm running round nosed, loaded long with 10mm System Mags too.

It's a balancing act on recoil springs - too light - doesn't feed in, too heavy, doesn't eject.
Putting a generous angle on the Firing Pin Stop helps for cycling light loads too.

The gun has a Dawson Higher mag release (Similar to EGW, only it is drilled and tapped for a button) too.
(Always check Mag / Ejector clearance when using these!!!)

We do stock both the Dawson and EGW raised 1911 mag releases.
