IPSC - Glock 34 / 17

I took my black badge course this weekend. Loved it!!!! I finally learned how to shoot a pistol. Amazing course! Wow. Very intense!

First question: I shot it with my Glock 34. So the 34 is not listed in the Production division. Does that mean it goes in the Open? Does that mean I shoot against the guys with the space guns with the laser beams, compensated thing-a-mee jigs?

Second question: I know everyone seems to be going CZ Shadow. There`s the Shadow 2 coming out soon. But visually......I don`t know. It`s too shiny, curvy or something. Here`s my question.....will I be at a great disadvantage if I go Glock 17? I`m kinda getting used to the Glock feel. I like it.....Any recommendations on a new purchase.....

You could shoot your Glock 34 in Standard Division. Just declare Standard at registration/match sign up. (You would be at a much less disadvantage in Standard compared to Open Division).

In Production, the Glock 17 will get the job done if you are comfortable with it. I have shot both a Glock (22) and a Shadow in Production Division. It's a personal preference...I didn't shoot the CZ well at all...I just couldn't get used to it. I enjoyed the Glock better.

There are "Big Guns" that have won majors with either gun.

Best bet is to try and borrow a CZ and see if you like it.

But most will agree that if you were going to go out and buy a production gun... CZ over Glock.

Answer to First question is : Yes you are right the 34 is not accepted in the Production division ( max barrel length in Prod. Div. is 127mm). In Open you shoot against Guns with Optical sight and all Mod that you can imagine. If I were you and I want the shoot the G34 I would go by Filthy1 suggestion.

For the 2nd question: The best way is to try both. I shoot G17 in IPSC, I am a Glock Fan, and I am very happy with it. Once you master it you will be fine ( training, training). I have also tried the CZ Shadow, found it easier to shoot. CZ made it out of the box for IPSC shooters. I didn't like it the way I like the G17.
Bottom line shoot both if you can, then make your decision, check the feeling, handling, how it fits in your hand etc..

I don't care for CZ myself unless you can get one with the decoker on it it might be better..

I have an M&P and works great and is not an expensive pistol and can get a range kit with it for a pretty good price.

I would agree with above and see if you can try out someone's pistol first and see how you like it.. Sig 226 is a pretty nice pistol as well. Many to choose from and ask around most people won't have a problem letting you try out their pistol. Don't be shy and ask..
 
I guess it all depends on how competitive you are and want to be. Unless you're a natural shooting wonder or you practice as much as the pros down south you're not gonna win many if any matches shooting a Glock or m&p. They just don't allow for fast follow up shots at longer distances like a all steel gun that's heavier and absorbs the recoil/muzzle flip better. There are some exceptions like the grand power polymer guns because of the rotating barrel. The shadow 2 is even heavier and has a longer sight radius so it's even better then the original shadow. Another good gun for production is the tanfoglio stock 2 or 3.
 
I shoot myself Glock 17 at Production, no issue. And you can win with Glock 17, it all depends on your skills. The gap between shots made by polymer vs steel gun is negligible in comparison to how fast you operate (draw and shoot) the gun, how fast you move, how good you shoot (shot placement I mean), IMHO.
 
I did my BB with G34 and a few matches with it. Its a good gun put in my particular case, I can shoot a lot better with a CZ. I am nowhere near a being a top shooter. Its all very subjective and varies from person to person.

My next best gun which I can shot good after CZ is Sig 226.
 
I'd think you'd want a G35 if you go standard. Score major instead of minor. I like my CZ. The single action trigger is far nicer than a glock trigger. And you don't have to swap out sights on a CZ, making the CZ comparable price-wise to a glock with sight upgrades.
 
I switched to the G34 for IDPA from a G17 because of my aging eyes. Other than the longer sight radius, I don't notice any difference with the G34. It takes over a year of serious training and competition before you have a chance of winning anything with any gun in any Division, so just learn the ropes with your G34 if you don't feel like buying a G17.

Bob Vogel managed to win the World Production title using a stock Glock 17 much to the chagrin of the CZ folks. So no reason why anyone else couldn't either. It just takes talent. It is always the archer and not the arrow.

Filthy1 gives good advice. Overall, Glock is not at much disadvantage, but G34 in Standard just aint a good choice. If you want to be in Production division, then you will need a new gun. Most will agree that CZ is probably best bet for the money for production. However, shooting G34 in standard wont be a problem if you are just in for the fun and to improve your skill. Keep in mind that dont pay too much attention when you compare scores with other guys in Standard division. I will suggest before you buy a new gun, try shooting a match or two with your G34 in Standard division. See how you feel. If you decide shooting in Standard aint what you want and want to get a new pistol, then go try CZ, Tanfoglio and some other guns before you buy a new one. At that time, you probably will met some new friends at the match who shoots other pistol that you can try.
