Just got my rpal with the intention of buying one pistol. Since i'm new to this i'm looking for some advice in buying a pistol that i can use in ipsc and maybe in some other shooting sports.
First off i'm left handed and don't seem to have any issues with using my dominant right eye as some would expect. Only challenge so far is that its a right handed world. I shoot shotgun, rifle bow all right hands suspect thats why no issues.
I have found that the only gun i will buy will have ambidextrous controls.
I'm not into loading up a gun with all kinds of fancy stuff (yet) so i'm looking at shooting in production or standard i believe. Where i'm stuck is weather or not to get a 9mm or .40?
If i do get a 9mm and want to move up in class would 9mm be sufficient? i see most shoot .40 or .45 in higher classes.
i've been looking at the cz 85 combat and the m&p .40 with optional thumb safety. Both of these i believe i can use as a left handed shooter, specially the m&p as even the mag release is on both sides.
Can someone help me out and tip me in one direction. pro's and cons to 9mm vs .40. production vs standard. I"m just too green with it all. Have to take a leap of faith at some point.
As far as shooting each calibre goes, i like them both, then again so green they all put a smile on my face

Try as many different pistols as you can. Nothing sucks more than spending good money on a gun you find you don't like.

The STI GP6 or Grand Power K100;) are 100 % ambi out of the box.

In your shoes I'd probably work from the other side of the equation. Find the gun you truly like, and then decide which division to shoot in. Besides Production and Standard, you may enjoy Classic division. A 1911 without a big assed mag button is usually not too unfriendly for a southpaw with an ambi safety.
 
I haven't looked too far into the IPSC divisions, but what I've seen so far is that using. 40 gives a little bit of bonus points compared to 9.

Walther PPQ is fully bi out of the box, just got one a few days ago and it is feeling ###y. By all accounts they make a good competition gun, though perhaps with a bit more lean towards 3gun as opposed to IPSC.

40 can put you in Major Power Factor over 9 but it still depends on the class. There is no Major in Production class, you would have to shoot in Standard to get the benefit of 40.
 
gun has not been modified in a way that counters OEM specs ... it's just flipping the safety

but I should have been more specific, sorry ... she is shooting it as Standard (minor) as opposed to Production ... either way it's legal :)
 
You should go to your local club that has a IPSC practice night, most members will help you out. Try some pistols, fill you in on the various divisions/rules and go from there.
As a lefty myself i have never really had a problem with any pistol so long as it has an ambi safety. Mag release and slide release i use my trigger finger.

good idea, we actually just set aside a night every other week at our club for ispsc practice and have a club meet on the 11th. cz 85b and combat ambi mag release or at least can have on left or right as you wish, pretty nice pistol and 9mm a bit nicer to attempt to learn the proper ins and outs of shooting, definately a gun on my list to shoot along with m&p 9mm
