I'll be honest, I've looked at a couple of IPSC webistes and done a bit of reading but I can't quite figure out what the heck IPSC even is. I get the impression that it's got something to do with speed and lots of ammo by the requirements for several magazines. Over in the rimfire section we're doing a bit of brainstorming to try and invent something for rimfire pistols and maybe even rifles and here's where IPSC comes in.

It would be really handy to know exactly what it is. It's rather hard to copy something that you know virtually nothing about. Aparantly it's got something to do with drawing a loaded pistol and doing some timed firing but that's about all I've got. Soooo, can someone give me some information? For example, I know there's some sort of standardized target but where is it positioned? Is it just a matter of putting it at head level 20 yards down range and doing a timed fire or is it something more intricate? Any physical movement of the shooter or anything like that? Are there a lot of targets downrange or it just shooting at one?

Thanks

we used to do a .22 combat match for the rimfire guys. of course we had to tailor it to the fact that most guys had rugers which suck to reload, and no holsters, but it was a blast. we just photocopied pictures of teh targets to be letter sized and set up stages.

targets could be anywheres from 2 to 20 metres. think track and field meets biathalon with pistols. lots of video up on the net. Matt Burkett just published a podcast of his performance at teh Florida Open, which can be downloaded.

It's easier to see than to describe fully; you're basically trying to shoot a course of fire as fast as possible, as accurately as possible, all while maintaining a safe muzzle direction and practicing safe gun handling (all this aslo applies to IPSC 3-gun, too).
Check out the video clips at http://www.hosercam.com/ for a "shooter's eye" view of the sport.

Happydude. I see that you are living just outside Winnipeg. Come to the IPSC match on Sunday March 12 at the Firing Line and check it out in person.
