Hello all,

Last year I tried IPSC events down in Venezuela with my cousin’s Beretta 90-2 and I was instantly hooked. I just finished my non-restricted and restricted tests and am waiting for my PAL in the mail.

I’ve tried a few other semi-auto pistols but for the safety features, feel, and price I like the Beretta 90-2. Locally they sell new for around $900. I tried a 9mm Beretta but someone at work mentioned that I would be better off competing with a 0.40 caliber bullet due to the weight and velocity compensation in IPSC. Can some people with IPSC experience share some information about this please?

I am also unsure of what equipment I will need and what my start-up costs will be. I have all the safety gear already. As I understand I will need a belt, holster, 3 magazines, a lockable pistol case, a trigger guard, and a gun cleaning kit. How much can I expect to pay for these? I don’t need top of the line but I don’t want clunky junk either. My PAL teacher suggested buying the gun and all equipment from one store at one time and to ask for a discount.

Thank you for your help,

Steve

Check out the sponsors at the top. All good people to get you started.

Also you will need to do your Black Badge Safety Course. You will probably see the term Black Badge or BB often. This is a safety course to show you are proficient with a pistol and understand the basic dynamics of moving and shooting in a safe manner.

Do a quick search and you will find countless treads on people looking to get into IPSC.

Check out the CZ or Tangfolio line of firearms.

I personally feel it's best to do it right the first time oppose to buying a cheap pistol, belt, etc. just to replace it all a year down the line.

I personally run a Sig 226 in 9mm ... great pistol but not developed for the game.

getting started (Vancouver)

in IPSC the least costly division to get into is Production where you can use a basically stock handgun in 9mm and not be at any disadvantage (lately CZ SP01 and SP01 Shadow are winning and becoming VERY popular, you can't go wrong by buying one).....40 caliber is for the next division up (Standard) and most people use fairly expensive custom handguns....if you really want to spend some money move on up to Open division
