IPSC Magazine Pouches

I didn't want to start a new thread but I was wondering how many mag pouches I should get.
5 seems to be the way to go?

4 is bare minimum and more then 5 is hard to reach (unless you are in Open). I am using 5 pouches + one magazine in a pocket.

Also if you getting CR-Speed pouches get a magnet + pouch combo and put it first on the belt. It comes handy on stages when you have to use all magazines off the table or barrel.

so 5 for anything, going to 6 if in open division?

In practice 5 should be enough for Open too. I haven't seen stage where 6 mags wasn't been enough (5 in the pouches and 1 in the gun).

I meant that you need to spread and angle your pouches around the belt and leave some space to make mags easier to reach. So, when keeping the good distance, 6th pouch would be behind your spine when reaching with the weak hand. With Open, pouches are allowed on front of the collar bone, so you get a bit more space on the belt to work with, but then Open mags are usually bigger/longer and need more space, so even then 6th pouch may not really fit in. :D

Five is a good number for mags to have but you only really need four pouches on your belt. what most people do is load a mag into the gun that is in the back pocket and rack a round into the gun. they remove the mag, safe the gun and holster it. they then put a round into the mag to top it back up to ten, then unholster the gun and insert the mag back into the gun giving them 11 rounds to start with. so that give you a total of 5 mags, one in the gun and four on your belt for a total of 51 rounds. the maximum stage in IPSC is 32 rounds so that gives you a safety factor of 60% (59.38 to be exact.)

Some of us carry 6 mags as instead of topping up mag #5 we just insert mag #6 into the gun and put #5 into our back pocket, however some do have the fifth pouch to store this short round mag into.

good, I only have 5 mags for my workhorse :D

I saw some neat mag holders at the POCO Steel match. One 1 inch or magnet at the top and the two small side walls. It was designed to hold mags bullet facing out. Never seen them before and forgot to ask what brand they were. They didn't totally enclose the mag. The side walls were basically small guides if anything.
