so I know USPSA has one, why not IPSC? a nice glossy mag dedicated to the sport, it could have updates and articles in it, major match announcements etc. I would bet that selling ad space would be easy as hell, and we have a built in readership. done properly it could be sold in stores like other gun rags.
Perhaps even better would be a good action shooting mag that covered more than just IPSC, but IDPA, Sniper, Service etc. I've seen GunGames and was unimpressed as it was boring as all get out to read, and seemed focused on the USA only.

At a guess, I'd say lack of "competitor density", especially in the english speaking world.

Ye Olde English speaking countries, aside from the US of A, ain't allowing a whole lot of civilian firearms ownership these days.

That was a good magazine. I have every issue from the first try.

I found the second try wasn't as good. Have a couple of those.
 
Yes, Gun Games was a nice looking rag. Trouble is it didn't make any money. Also, I would think decent content would be a real bugger to find for every issue. If you are relying on volunteer writing, well, that never seems to fit into a deadline. If you rely on professional writers then you make your deadline but you can't afford to pay them. If you want colour spreads printing costs for such a mag would probably be at least as much or more than something like "Newsweek" or "MacClean's" but with far less readership, so the unit price would be very high. Then of course you have the Chapters “Big Brother” conglomerate who imports most of the printed material into this country and have an active policy of not carrying anything to do with the shooting sports, so that nukes the Canadian market at least.

I'd love to see it happen but I don't know how one would overcome all of the obstacles and still make a profit.
 
I would buy a subsciption to a magazine showing our sport as a safe and fun sport. Topics could include stage design ideas, (good and bad), an R.O./rules question section and a host of other areas of interest. It would help to show the general public that we are not a bunch of Rambo wannabes. Sounds like a great idea to me. Sign me up!

Canadian magazines about decorating or cooking maybe. Guns? I seriously doubt it. They do it in the form of tax credits in the animation/film industry. No subsidy, just less pay out.
 
Just what we need a magazine that will be read by shooters excplaining how safe the sport they enjoy is. Do we really need the re-enforcement of that concept by way of a magazine or do you think a magazine aimed at the Action Shooters of Canada is going to be read by those outside the gun community.

Probably why the last attempt failed...no audience. The Internet has about song the death knell to the print media.

print media is alive and well. there is just something about holding a magazine in your hands and reading it.
Lets keep brainstorming on this.

Come on Slavex, you can't really believe this can you. The technical side of shooting, gun tests, reloading, training can all be found either on the net or in video form if not in person. Who in Canada is going to advertise in the magazine? Lets see, Para who virtually everybody in Canada loves to dump on (Upholding a long Canadian belief that is truly necessary to eat ones young), Air Canada for whom we have a boycott on despite the fact all the are doing is unbundling their services like every other airline is doing these days or the Banks.

Hell I suggested we post IPSC results on the net and half the members on this board thought it would be a violation of the Federal Privacy Act at best and at worst an invitation for an home invasion and you want a magazine with pictures of real people shooting IPSC????? As it is we get results like John S. or Harry Q, like it would offend national security to name names.

For me it is a toss up read the latest NFA/CSSA magazine or watch paint dry..

Bob I wasn't referring to Canada, I was referring to the whole world. IPSC is a rather large sport, the membership itself is large enough to support a decent magazine, add in the IDPA people, Cowboy action etc etc, and you have a large selection of people who would be interested in a magazine if it was done right. Look at the paintball magazines for example, or the skateboard mags, they are huge sellers, and their readership numbers are constantly rising. The problem is, no one has tried to make shooting guns look cool, they keep trying to make secret. if we copied the approach of the "extreme" sports mags, I think we'd bring in a lot of outsiders.
 
I don't think print media is dead , crippled maybe , but not dead .
Try as I might I can't take the computer to the can as easily as a magazine .
For that reason alone I can't see print leaving us anytime soon .
