I searched this forum but I couldn't find anything. Do people do mini rifle (22s with red dots) driving distance from the GTA? Training requirements?

Thanks!

While the idea of mini rifle is great, I highly doubt there is significant support in Ontario for it. IPSC Mini rifle was intended for regions where full power rifles were not available, that not being the case in Canada (despite our gimped 5 round mag laws) the establishment has little to no reason cater to it. The prevailing mentality as demonstrated by euxx is that if you can shoot something with 223rem, then why shoot 22lr, I believe it represents an underlying opinion that we have too few match slots for existing disciplines in Ontario to cater to another kind of IPSC match.

As to your question about training, as it stands right now, if you get your black badge you are accepted to shoot mini rifle, rifle, pistol, shotgun, and action air.

Rifles and ammo are more affordable. Plus 22s are just plain fun!

The cost of firearm/ammo isn't really where expense required to shoot ipsc anything comes from...
If it's the price of a gun and ammo that's preventing someone from shooting... They probably can't afford to get into the game(s) at all.
As far as .22's being fun.... I disagree.
They're boring.

If .22's are "fun" then 9mm/.40/.45 are FUNNER!

Thank you for the info simar.

Well 667, everybody has their different strokes! While I do have a nice AR15 and G17, I've never gotten into IPSC, so I am ignorant of total costs. Excluding guns, mags, mag carrier, fuel, car wear/tear, what would someone's cost breakdown be for an IPSC rifle match, or pistol match?

I'm reminiscent of a great match EESA used to put on called the rimfire challenge. I went in 2011 with my brother and had a lot of fun. They had a course where a team of two had to shoot a ton of tiny little reactive targets from ~20-120 yds under time pressure, a course where you shot game animal paper targets while standing at ~20-50 yd range (ie hunting), a course for shooting your best groups, a mini rifle type course indoors, and finally a team challenge where you had to saw through a 2x4. Having a couple different 22 rifles helped tackle all the different courses. I haven't been able to find any info on whether they are still doing this match.

Too many variables...
One match I went to this year cost $1100 in gas, at least $1000 in hotels, $450 for my entry fee, and who knows what on ammo/food.

Another match cost me $4 in gas and a $2 fee.

It all depends on what and where you wanna play.

Banger hits it though.

I was asking about it as well. Even though I own an AR, I'd still shoot MR for the fun of it. The barrier of entry is low and most handgun ranges are more than good enough to set up a stage.. I think the biggest barrier to MR matches comes from the fact that people running the show (especially on club level) are guys who know handguns, pistols, possibly revolvers and maybe some handguns.. I couldn't get my club's IPSC director to allow me to shoot a stage or 2 with my 10/22 on a club practice night. It's hard enough to get the occasional 3gun/shotgun match going when they relent... We've had a stretch of several years without a single IPSC rifle match. This year was great in comparison with EESA throwing a pure rifle match and Peterborough doing a couple of multigun IPSC matches. If I were you, I wouldn't even bother going through the official IPSC channels. I'd organize it as "an outlaw match, running on IPSC MR rules". Give it a few more years and enough long gun shooters will infiltrate IPSC enough to be able to run 1 or 2 matches once the shotgunners and rifle shooters have had their scraps.
