IPSC open gun help on caliber

Been looking at making the move to open in IPSC. Have looked at a couple guns on here and locally but need a bit of advice on caliber, was convinced that I wanted 9mm major as i already reload the caliber and have tons of brass. I was enticed yesterday by a .40 in nice shape locally for a decent price

So here are my options

9 major - already have almost everything needed for reloading and brass is plentiful
40 major - decent gun local and although I don't load for this I have the conversion kit for my Dillon, dies and a bucket of brass
38 super - no equipment or brass at all

Any advice would be appreciated

Don't get the 40!

- 40 doesn't work as well as the 9 and 38 - there simply can't be as much pressure for the comp as the .355 bullet options.

- STI discontinued everything except 9 and 38 as options for raceguns a long time for a good reason.

- We sell Ten 9mm Major raceguns to every one 38 super. Must be a good reason for that...

- Range brass, if prepped properly works just fine - it does in my two 9 major guns that I shoot in Open division.

I reload my 9mm brass up to 4 x, no problem

the 40 will work, but you will have to go with the 135gr. projectile and powders with the same burning rate as Vhit.105 and HS7, that is if you can get here in Canada, a highbreed bbl would work with a good comp. almost the same set up as the use to Modified division. no disadvantage with the mag capacity since all are limited to 10.
for practical reason, stay with the 9, but with you want to optimize your open gun then the super is the a better choice, lots of powder choices/ more powder case capacity, you just have to pick your brass which is a big hussle for my part.

I use range brass, sometimes pick up my own shot brass, and don't do any sorting of any kind in my 9 major open division gun.

No ammo related issues at all.

If money for brass is no issue, go 38 Super Comp. Otherwise, 9 Major.

Either way, do not get the .40 for Open.

357SIG. Huge fan. .40 brass is a lot stronger than 9mm. 40 brass is common and cheap... SIG you can choose from 5 powders to load, and has a big edge in case capacity. More Powder, more gas volume, comp keeps the gun flatter than either 9mmMaj or 38 Super.


Cons. Powder Pigs. 15.7gn H110 makes 180PF, and big effen boom (lots of RO elbow room)

I like 9 major, but brass life.....

I like Super but brass cost....

I love SIG but powder cost....

Pick one and welcome to the dark side.

Go with 9mm major and you will be happy with extra cash in your poket. If you prep brass properly, you can use range brass.
