IPSC Orientation Course

Send a pm to stormbringer, he is the black badge coordinator for Ontario last time I checked, I checked the website and didn’t see anything coming up listed there but he may know of something in the works, good luck. You could also try getting a hold of Allman from the alliston gun club, he has run courses in the past, I don’t have his contact info but start with the club.

You learn that on the course.

You learn that before the course..when you inquire about the sport and how to get into it.... and when somebody look to register for the course ..he know it is a black badge course. There is no other name for it.

Typical IPSC gatekeeping. “Welcome to the sport OP, but you used the wrong terminology and don’t have Salomon shoes, so kindly go shoot IDPA instead”

No ####....how petty.
Someone who doesn't know that the sport's introductory orientation and training course is called the Black Badge is pretty common. In fact the BB isn't used across IPSC around the world.
IPSC is also not at every club, nor does every gun owner implicitly know the correct terminology for everything immediately. Many gun owners still call a PAL an FAC but we know what they mean.

The Black Badge course is a Canadian thing only. Other countries have similar courses but they are not called teh Black badge course.

In Europe - IPSC Belgium - even if it is mostly a French speaking country - they call it Black Badge Course. Brazil call it a Black Badge course and I am sure many more countries call it a Black Badge course. Do your own research on the IPSC 100 Regions of your choice. You will see it is not a Canadian thing.

Spain call it a Safety & Orientation course.

So the OP is not too far out - except he is in Canada and it is called a Black Badge Course here.
The saying’ when you are in Rome do like the Roman..apply - when you want to be understood - you take the language and terms of the land...

Hopefully the OP can find a course and complete it with success. All the Best !

What a good resource to find upcoming IPSC orientation courses?

Looking for any course around the gta and up to Muskoka region.

Given the current covid climate it’ll likely be spring before we see any Black Badge courses within your area. Target Sports in Stouffville has done a few courses over the last couple winters at their indoor range, so you could check with them, but their range has just shut down due to covid, so anyone’s guess when they’ll be fully operational again.

Jems suggestion to PM Stormbringer who is the coordinator of the Ontario Black Badge program and or Allman at Alliston are both good bets. Think Haliburton’s not to far from you either. They’re looking to host a Black Badge course in the spring for their members, but if it doesn’t fill up they may have a couple spots available to help fill and justify the course.

In the meanwhile the links Wendell sent you should give you a good idea what to expect and help you prep for the course. Its not as onerous as some like to make out, but you do need to be very comfortable, competent and fairly accurate with a HG.

If you’re still looking to get into a BB course come March, send me a PM and i’ll do what I can to help. The IPSC program is very well organized with usually several matches on offer every weekend throughout the season. It’s a lot of fun and worth the effort, so stick with it!!

Thanks for all the input everyone. This thread completely slipped my mind. The reason i called it "orientation course" was because when i completed my IDPA black badge course, the certificate said "orientation" so i figured that was a safe way to describe any sort of pre-requisite IPSC.

I very surprised how little the IDPA orientation course covered (matter of fact, the safety course as well...).
