IPSC pistol for smaller hands

I use my slide release more often than I should have to (I like shooting lots of rounds at targets when I shouldn't:redface: ), I don't find it (the action of pressing the slide release ) slows me down any if I have some distance between ports or shooting positions; what slows me down is firing 3 extra rounds that facilitated my gun running dry:p It can cost time when the shooting positions are very close.

Yes, but if it ever locks open on you during a stage when you don't want it to....like when you are shooting on the move for instance....then you will regret having that thing work at all. I find it better to watch my sights lift so I know where the shot went, and count my shots.

Hi Dragoon,

I read your string 20 times, and still cant figure out where the fresh mag is comming from if you don't have to remove your weak hand! Got some kind of Laura Croft loading thing going on out there;)
LOL

Steve

No, the support hand inserts the fresh mag then the shooter has to "to re-establish his grip with his support hand and re-acquire the target. This can be done concurrently with activating the slide lock lever with the support hand thumb."

that is what I should be doing,.... more calling my shots. Sometimes it doesn't work that way:redface:

Lots of good info here. Thanks for bearing with the IPSC newb. :)

I didn't realize that shooting a 1911 got me out of production class. I did a little reading and confirmed that with the rule book. So maybe I am looking for something non-1911.

What I'd really love to do is shoot some and XD40 and an HK but that's not an option unless someone near Winnipeg wants to meet up at the firing line. I've actually fired a 9mm and .40 Glock and didn't mind them. Glock is certainly an option...

Anyone have any experience with a Sig 220? I saw one on Armco's website that looks to have a smaller grip and the Sig slide release seems closer. Opinions?

As another vote for the XD 40. WHen I went looking for something different than a 1911 for IDPA and my soon to be IPSC addiction. My son and myself tried out a lot of different gun from Glock, XD's and Sigs etc. we both have large hands and I dont have a problem with the slide lock on a 1911 as I use my week hand thumb when I need it. However my son who is 14 managed a year ago to shorten his trigger finger and its neighbour by 2 and 1 joint respectively with a wood splitter. So in our search for a short trigger reach for him the XD beat even the Glock and my 1911 by quite a lot and he has no problems with the trigger on it even with a finger that ends at the first knuckle. Hope this helps in your decision.

Ohh and Dragoon you have to excuse SteveS as he has jumped out of a few to many aircraft without a chute and has rattled his brain beyond repair ;-)

the M&P or 90-Two would be perfect as you can choose the grip size on both guns, and unlike the Walther which also offers that option, they have standard mag catches, not levers, and they can both be easily switched to lefty friendly mag catches.

Well I held an MP today and it felt really good, especially with the smallest grip. Leaning towards the MP but I still want to hold an XD. Seems the XD is cheaper too. Problem is I can't find one in Winnipeg. I really don't want to take a road trip out to Wolverine but I might have to...

Don't worry about the slide lock on a pistol. In the 10+ years I've been shooting IPSC I can't remember the last time I used the slide lock. You just don't need to.

Another option for the trigger reach is the interchangeable trigger groups made by SVI that have different inserts which change the lenght of the trigger. However they are only made for 1911 style pistols.

the 9mm ones will break if dropped on cement often. but phone S&W and get a bunch of spares, that way you are covered.

Are the .40's made the same? I'm planning to shoot IPSC so the mags will be dropped...

most IPSC matches aren't on cement so you really don't have much to worry about.

In the nice climate of BC that's true, but in Ontario, Quebec and out this way; at least 5 months of the year are shot indoors on concrete floors :(

Well I bought a gun from Wolverine today. I should have it in a little over a week. In the end I went with an .40 XD. Thanks to all who replied.
