IPSC Production choices

Everyday Joe looking into shooting IPSC for FUN and be able to be a little bit competitive (if things change and I want more, THEN I may look at another firearm).

I know I know I know, everyone will start going on and on about the SP-01, or the Glock (vomit), etc. etc. etc.

I am not asking about those.

Looking for the Pro's & Cons of the following:

Sig P226 TACOPS vs H&K P30L

**And I am willing to go either way on the .40 S&W or 9mm Luger (I shoot a P229 .40 S&W right now -I enjoy the calibre- and can group my clip about 10" at 20 yards in ~30 secs on a 1/2 decent day).

...... Looking for peoples experiences on the two pistols performances, drawbacks, etc.




Or, talk me up - Do I just go in with my P229 .40 S&W ?

If you like the gun then buy it. Everything can work for IPSC.
There are guns that or more ideal, but it makes only a very small difference to your scoring. One thing to consider is 9mm is cheaper than 40 and since everyone shoots minor you could consider saving some money on your ammo cost.
 
If you need an excuse to buy a new gun, then buy what you feel suits you best.

Neither of the guns you mention is tearing up IPSC Production division at the moment. So what? If you want to play, go for it. It's your money and your recreation. Do it to suit yourself.
 
Well Max Michel uses a Sig when he shoots production and KC is shooting an HK right now and I believe it's a p30. To be honest shoot something you like. Right now if I were you I'd just go ahead and shoot the 229.
 
SIG 226-
Pros- Same controls as the 229 you are used to
- Easy to find mags, parts etc
Cons- If you want different gun- very much same as your 229
-it's not an HK ;)

HK P30L-
Pros- Fantastic gun, can make it fit like a glove
-No need to upgrade as you would have one of the best DA/SA's

Cons-High thumb hold WILL drop your slide on empty (SIG's do the same for me but more pronounced)
-Mags are pricey, parts are more difficult to obtain
-Big one here- Holster selection is poor as the only I have located are Serpa's

I think starting with your 229 may be the best choice of all (if the bbl doesn't take it out of production class)

Who is the 'bbl' & why might they take it out of production ? Is there a risk of getting decent with it only to have it removed from use in the division ?

"bbl" is an abbreviation for 'barrel'.

Since your 229 likely has an aftermarket "bbl" to make it legal in Canada, that may disqualify it from Production Division.
 
I did my black badge a few years ago with a P30L.

I rocked that week end course! I did pretty darn well. Use something you like. Forget what people say.

All the hype on a specific gun only helps a few and mostly only the mental game and self confidence thing on the new shooter.

P.S. I used mostly the P226 in the past. Was not satisfied at the time with my shooting. I then started to shoot other pistols. Did better. After a few years I decided to go back with my Sig. In my head I just had to shoot it again. I had to see if it was me or the gun.

I now shoot the P226 pretty well.

So I guess for me now there is no good or bad choice. Other then reliability and the quality of the firearm. But in general I believe that the user will make a pistol shoot good or bad. as long as he puts time shooting it and become comfortable with it.

Shoot what you enjoy shooting. You can always try others, as you gain experience.

I've been shooting IPSC with a P226 for years. Are there others with a better trigger, yes, and yet my SIG has never failed me.
 
Shoot whatever turns your crank. Some of the guns mentioned like the shadow and Glocks are going to give some shooters a clear advantage with some of their attributes, like trigger reset, bore over grip axis, mag release and seat design, etc. But as mentioned those are pretty minor things in the big scheme of things.
Who knows, you may get into it and find Open gheyness is your thing....;)
 
Ok, I'll start with my P229 - at the LEAST I will get much better at shooting it & then see where my interests go.

Anyone able to point me towards Belt / holster / mag carriers (and what other things I may need?), Glasses & hearing protection are covered, I have a Blackhawk Level 2 CQC Duty Serpa Holster currently (should work for IPSC start). And I've been looking for websites with Competitive Pistol training exercises too, so far all I have been doing is the 'white wall trigger pull' drill to try to get less barrel movement on trigger squeeze.

** and I should probably get gear that will double for IDPA as well !

I had a HK P30L.....very reliable gun - amazing grips....but it was not particularly accurate with me behind the trigger and with a high thumb hold the slide would not lock back when empty...which is not helpful in IPSC. I now shoot in the "Shadow Division" (thats a great line...lol). While the HK was very reliable for me it's no where near as accurate as a Shadow and there is NO comparison in the trigger....the HK trigger was horrible for a 'competitive' gun. HK mags are expensive and holsters are scarce. Buy what you like, and have fun, thats the most important thing, but since you asked, I'd give the a thumbs down to the HK P30 for IPSC Production.
