I've just bought a S&W Performance Centre Model 627 5" eight shot revolver that I intend on using in IPSC Production Division (I want to see how many semi-auto shooters I can beat going 'head-to-head' with a wheel gun!).

According to the IPSC 'Production Division List' (http://www.ipsc.org/proddiv.php) under the S&W heading:

Any DAO or DA/SA revolver with a barrel length of up to 5" is approved

So, the gun should be 'good to go'.

The gun is chambered in .357 Magnum but with a Production Division Power Factor floor of 125 there's no need to use that ammo. In fact, it's common for people to shoot .38 Special ammo in their .357 Magnum chambered guns.

But I want to take this a step further. Given that, in a 'moon clip' loaded gun, a 'shorter' round makes for a faster and more reliable reload, I want to use '.38 Colt Short' reloaded ammo. According to the IPSC Rule Book for handguns (http://www.ipsc.org/pdf/RulesHandgun.pdf), at item 4 of Appendix D, Minimum bullet caliber / cartridge case length, is:

9mm (0.354”) / 19mm (0.748”)

I will be loading .357/.358 sized bullets (158 grain) and according to the Starline Brass website (http://www.starlinebrass.com/descriptions.html#38):

38 Short Colt is basically a shortened 38 Special. O.A.L. of .755+.005

So the bullets/brass make minimum specs.

why don't you just go win revolver...lol.

Eight round revolvers must be reloaded after six rounds in Revolver Standard Division so they offer no competitive advantage. Plus, shooting 100+ .357 Magnum rounds (to make 'Major') in a Level II match wouldn't be much fun.

There might be a possible issue with the fact that the revolver does not come chambered for the colt round.

I shot a 327 yesterday with .357 factory and was done in after 16 rounds.

I load 38's to +P realm to make 125+ PF.

I don't think that there would be a problem using the shorter brass as long as he's is loading to +P for PF.

The problem that Mas would have is brass availablity.

I suggest just using the plentiful 38Sp brass.

Also the moonclips are very delicate and bend easily, so much so, that you may have a problem on the speed reload. The clips are only .022" thick, about half of what the 45ACP 'clips are.

But where does it say that in the rule book?

Nope. Starline makes and sells .38 Short Colt brass for $126.25/1000 ($3.25 less than they sell .40 S&W for)

Just note that the body of the 38S&W is .386" in diameter and the 38 Sp is .379"

It's a good point...and I'd recommend posing the question to Mark H (NROI grand puba)...but I think you;d be OK.

The S&W Model 610 is chambered in 10 mm...and it's prefectly legal to use it with .40 cal...so..it would make sense to me that the same logic could be applied in this case.

Disclaimer: Applying logic is not always a good idea when it comes to the little red book...

There are a few times that good posts on this forum have knocked me over laughing. This was one of them in 2006:

Shooting revolver in IPSC is a lot like masturbation; fun to do but really ugly to watch.....

Still makes me laugh...:D

Seriously, Mark's pretty busy these days so I've written the Production Rules Chair and asked for clarification regarding the different ammo and whether the up to 5" definition in fact, includes 5". Should have an answer in the next day.

Will it be fun for you? Yes! Hell, even if they rule against you and move you up to open, it will still be fun! (Personally, I think you are good to go, though I don't recall ANYONE ever shooting production revolver at any match I have been to).

I am all in favour of shooting just for fun once in a while, never mind where you place.

I have always wanted to get a red nine broomhandle Mauser or a Luger, and shoot it at a club match, just for fun! (unfortunately I don't own either, but you get the idea).

Got the Reply. You're good to go with the loading and the gun. Have Fun!!!

Good luck with it, i have seen similar setups for steel and NRA Action with that combo.
Kinda funny though a Performance Center gun for production?:)
