Hi guys, I was wondering what kind of grip modifications were legal for the Production Division?

Would a grip reduction or perhaps a custom back grip insert be legal on a M&P?

Original parts and components offered by the OFM as standard equipment, or as an option, for a specific model
handgun on the IPSC approved handgun list are permitted, subject to the following:
16.1 Modifications to them, other than minor detailing (the removal of burrs and/or adjustments unavoidably
required in order to fit replacement OFM parts or components), are prohibited. Other prohibited
modifications include those which facilitate faster reloading (e.g. flared, enlarged and/or add-on
magwells, etc.), changing the original color and/or finish of a handgun, and/or adding stripes or other
embellishments.

17. Aftermarket parts, components and accessories are prohibited, except as follows:
17.1 Aftermarket magazines are permitted, subject to 16.2 above.
17.2 Aftermarket open sights (see Rule 5.1.3.1) are permitted, provided their installation and/or adjustment
requires no alteration to the handgun.
17.3 Aftermarket grip panels which match the profile and contours of the OFM standard or optional grip
panels for the approved handgun and/or the application of tape on grips (see Appendix E3) are permitted.
However, rubber sleeves are prohibited.

In other words you can buy smaller grips made by S&W if they are available, but you cannot modify the existing ones.

So you can't modify the grips and you need to use either OFM grips or aftermarket grips that are just like the OFM grips.

It doesn't say anything about shooting without the grips, so could one just not use any of the backstraps at all?

I don't see why not... I can't imagine it would be very comfortable though...

I'm a firm beleiver in shoot what ya got and have fun, however if the gun is THAT large in your hands then I can't imagine you'd be able to shoot it very well... perhaps a gun with smaller grips? A shadow with thin aluminum grips may do it or if you really want a striker fired gun a ruger sr9 or glock may be smaller than the M&P?

There is a reason Production division is commonly called Shadow class... If you haven't tried a shadow I highly reccommend you try it out.

This gun is for the wifey. She has extremely small hands unfortunately, kids sized hands. She tried the shadow, but it was too heavy for her to hold up for longer than a few mags.

She really liked the recoil of the shadow though. It was her favorite, but she just couldn't hold it up.

Perhaps a different cz 75 that's lighter?

Not to sound mean, but if she can't even hold the gun up is she able to handle the recoil of 9mm? Also if she is planning to shoot IPSC you aren't shooting for very long. Aside from your BB course you're only going to shoot for a total of 5 minutes max at a match. Less as you get better.

I have shot an SR9 and they are a neat little gun, however they have a mag safety which is annoying for IPSC. However they do have a very slim grip.

I really think a shadow with thin grips would be perfect. I shoot with a 12 year old who does great with his shadow and thin grips. He took his BB and shot his 1st match last month and did great with it. A little slow, but that comes with time.

I am by no means an expert in any way shape or form so please don't think i'm trying to be a know it all. I'm just sharing what I know. I've only been shooting IPSC for a year and handguns for about 3 years. I don't know everything, but I've learned from ALOT of mistakes and would be happy to help you guys avoid some of the ones I made.

Yeah, I appreciate the help. I think we need to revisit the cz for sure. She can hit bullseyes, but she takes a long time to sight and shoot between shots.

I'm just trying to figure out what her options are.

try a cz 85 combat or cz 75 shadow.
