I am doing a Black Badge course next month and was wondering if anyone had any good recipe's I could try for my ruger 9mm P-89??

So far, I am loading Winchester 147gr MC Match bullets into Remington cases on top of Federal primers. For the powder I am using 3.6gr of Vita Vouri.

Whatever you load up, chronograph it to ensure it mees a power factoe of 125.

Velocity * weight of projectile / 1000

ie 851 FPS * 147 wgt of proj = 125.097

Give yourself a cushion of 5 - 8 % extra

You will need 500 to 600 rounds or more thru out the whole BB course. Trust me you DO NOT need a special recipe for power factor especially for a 9mm handgun to take the course. You would rather want to MAKE SURE that your reload works flawlessly with your gun thru out the whole course. REMEMBER... you would want your gun to cycle properly and not jam during the course of fires. 500-600 rounds is a lot to go thru and it is critical that you have a flawless working load for you Ruger. You dont want distractions during the course of fire. I'd stick to what is currently working with your gun. Only you can tell what works with it. Forget the power factor and the fancy stuff for your reload for the BB Course.
When you are done with the BB course and a qualified IPSC shooter, then you can experiment with your recipe. That would be the fun part.

Good luck on your course. Shoot safely. :)

LOAD your rounds on the light side.....I saw guy's shooting factory ammo on my course they had fun to say the least....I was just above 125PF.......had a much easier time.... ;)

I don't think there is a PF requirement for the Black Badge

Plus having a misfire is not a reason for DQ on the BB course.. Heck it's a good chance to practive your Tap, Rack, and Bang drill ;)

Heck. one of the people on our course hit the baffles (above his head) and he still passed..

What he said.

RePete.

What they said. If you can spare the cash, buy factory for the course.
Most of the people on my course didnt reload and didnt want the brass. Your factory and everyone elses factory will give you a good pile of brass to reload with.

I have 700 rounds of stockpiled factory ammo that I could use for the course and will bring along just in case however, I also have 2000 Winchester bulk brass and 2000 Federal MC Match 147gr bullets.
I know there is no power requirement for the Black Badge course but I will be shooting in a competition soon after. I figure why not load and seperate three or four recipe's to use during the class. This way I can test them out during the black badge, and decide which one I really like. By the time I enter my first actual competition I will already have at least one favorite load for my 9mm.

Besides, why use snappy factory ammo when I can reload my own and cut down the amount of felt recoil reducing the amout of actual target re-acqusitions required per stage.

So far I haven't seen a response about the "no power factor for the BB" from anyone connected to your section (or any section for that matter)

I don't buy the "no power factor" rumour...

I'd advise you to contact someone from your section (IPSC Alberta) and get an official answer...

PM GunNut member Dragoon and ask him...I believe he's a BB instrucor as well as a member of the Board for IPSC Albarta...

Good luck...have fun

...hhhmmm, guess I could have contributed a load as well...

Depending on your gun...a very popular load in Production with the 147 is about 3.4-3.8 gr Vit 320 (at factory OAL)

Nice and soft. I use 3.5 in my Glock and it has a PF of 129

Start at the lower end and work your way up till you meet the PF and have a slight fudge factor...

Cheers

Quigley,

Want to share your recipe for 9mm 125 grn FMJ as well please.

sorry...don't have one

I would think that Vit 320 would still be a good powder choice though...start low (about 3.8 and work your way up till you get the PF you want) Look for signs of pressure (breach face marks in the headstamp...flat primers). I know quite a few guys that load Titegroup with the 125's, which is a faster powder, and don;t get any pressure signs so Vit 320 should be fine...

When you work up a load...make sure you post the results

Cheers

Thanks Quigley, I am shooting a 9mm Ruger P-89. I know Mass (Dragoon) and got the recipe you suggested (147gr with 3.6 of Vit N320) from him.

I have not asked him if there was a power factor requirement for the BB but I have heard rumor some guys have shot factory on past courses. I just basically dismissed using factory as I am all set up with a Dillon 550b and losts of components.

Does anyone have a good recipe for the 9mm using titegroup???

I load 4.3 gr Tightgroup behind a 124 gr Montana Gold FMJRN in Winchester cases with Winchester primers.LOA is 1.125in.

Chronos about 1035 fps in my Beretta elite.TG is very consistent, shoots clean and a pound seems to last forever. If you want heavier loads,I'd load with a slower powder though(eg HS6),but for the 125 IPSC PF,its great

Quigley,
I finally got my VV N320 from Al. I will let you know my VV load result when I finish with my remaining 231.

I load 4.1gr. Titegroup in Winchester cases, Winchester primers with a Frontier 124gr. FP @ 1.125". Averages 1050fps out of my GLock 17 and burns nice and clean. Meters great on a Dillon 550 and as sevoman says, a pound lasts forever! In my case I'm still working on the keg. Its my favorite powder for 9mm, .40 and .45GAP.
