So Ive been thinking about shooting a couple of qualifiers in revolver this year with my 586 but just want to clear some things up.

1) I assume 38 and 38+p are minor loads, 357 is major?

2) can you #### the hammer on the gun then fire or must everything be in double action?

3) How many rounds do you generally carry on you in loaders?

Thanks!

I don't shoot a .357, but yes I assume your statement is correct. You will have to chrono your .357 to check if you make major power or not. My guess it will have to be a "snappy" load to make major power, depending on bullet weight.

2) can you #### the hammer on the gun then fire or must everything be in double action?
Yes, you can #### the hammer and then fire, single action, but you will be much slower that way than if you shoot double action.

3) How many rounds do you generally carry on you in loaders?
Personally I load 6, with a moon clip from my pocket, when instructed to do so. I then have 60 more rounds that I carry on my belt.

Thanks!

Hope that helps

Andrew, if I was you I would drop over to Armco and have a chat with Clarence. Nobody knows the ins and outs of shooting .38's in IPSC like he does. I have seen him win a lot of matches shooting minor. He also developed a very soft major load a couple of years ago.

FYI most of the factory .38Sp ammo will NOT make minor PF which is why IDPA lowered the PF for their revolver divs.

thanks is was, I had not seen revolver users use single action, but can see it helping on plates.

thats a good point!! i don't think ive ever seen a revolver shooter #### one back, but i know i sure as hell would for some of those long shots!

~~~happiness is a warm gun~~~
Most don't use the single action, you just get used to the trigger feel of your gun and the plates will be no problem.
As for rounds to pack, 8 is more than enough, remember with a revolver its not about hose mode, every shot must count because you can't afford any misses.
Not sure if your reloading your own but a lot of 38 special loads don't even make minor, weather conditions and altitude can make a difference.
If your loading your own, then theres a whole nother thread worth of what ifs and what nots...
Thanks all, and thanks John, Hope to see Clarence next time Im up there on a wednesday.
I have a good stock of +p so hopefully that will work.
