IPSC revolver round?

Hi all, my local club is starting to promote more revolver shooting in our 'action shooting' days and I would like to use my Smith 6" 686 but not sure what to load up for rounds...? I have lots of nickel .357 brass all cleaned and ready to go.

Also if this turns out to be more fun than I imagine, is one type of 'speed loader' better than another? What the heck are 'moon clips' anyway :)?

i prefer the safariland comp III speedloaders for action shooting - they are pretty well the standard..

Moon clips are small flat metal discs that hold all six (or eight) cartridges together as one unit and allow them to be reloaded and ejected as that unit. Your revolver must be made (or converted) to use them.

assuming a 158 gr 357 bullet your reloads need to make around 800 fps for minor and 1050 for major

all things being equal the shorter round (ie 38 spec) will reload faster than the longer one

Thanks guys, thats why I hang out here...the question might seem dumb to some...but an informative answer is always appreciated!

I don't completely bubba mine but i do fill the centre hole so they release a little earlier.

There is also such an animal as ICORE. Your 686 would find an excellent home there. There are a couple affiliated clubs in Eastern Ontario already.
 
There are quite a few new 6 and 8 round revolvers utilizing moon clips in 9MM. Alpha Proj makes a inexpensive 6 round model which I have been shooting in limited 6 class in ICORE. There are 3 clubs currently shooting ICORE in Ontario. PFGA, Frontenac and Sharon year round indoors and outdoors. There is 3 more clubs looking at starting up for 2017. If you need any info or help we would be glad to assist you in getting started.
 
One option is to have your cylinder reamed to take 9mm and machined for the moonclips. Then load for that. Berrys 158 in a 9mm case.

Option two use 38 cases but be more competitive by cutting the cases down to 9mm length. Less pain getting rounds in and out of the cylinder.

Option 3 buy a 9mm revolver!

Option 1 would require a new cylinder, plus the barrel is larger than the bullets being thrown down it - a distinct lack of accuracy.

You will need to read the equipment rules to see what is legal and what is not.
 
fyi there's a revision being presented by Vince Pinto to allow Revolver 6 shot major and 8 shot minor for IPSC. If that goes through, there's not much point in putting a lot of money into modifying a 6 shot 38/357 for IPSC. You would be better off putting your money into a 627 shooting 38 Short Colt or a 929 shooting 9mm.

I really enjoy my Project Alpha 9mm. It was my first DA revolver and the build quality was actually pretty good. The $10-12/ea cost of moon clips relegated it to a range toy for me though so I used it to learn about tinkering with revolvers.
 
One of our sponsors at the Canadian Regional Revolver Championships was the owner of Ranch Products.
They among other things produce moon clips.
Steven announced they will be producing an affordable moon clip for the Alpha, available shortly.
This should make them a good choice for new Icore competitors.
I'll post when they are available.
 
use 158gn berry 38/357 in the 9mm case and youll be fine. You can get the cylinder reamed to take the tapered cartridge

Great news! Other than wishing the crane was a little more beefy, it's a pretty good revolver.
