During a n IPSC stage, are there any rules that relate to what the match organizer can and can't make you do before you start to shoot? Like for instance, could a person create a stage where the shooter must load his round into his mag before starting, or things like that?

...it's within reason...

If it's a really silly idea, and it's a Level 2 match...it would likely be "discussed" during the sanctioning process...

Exactly. At the end of the day, it's a shooting competition, not ballroom dance. Challenges to the shooter like terrain, props, etc have to keep that in mind.

I'd hate to see a course designer feel hemmed in by convention, but sometimes you just need to evaluate.

(Ok, I confess in my past to setting up full suprise stages, starting with an unfamiliar revolver out of a briefcase before you draw your own gun, etc.:D )

I actually LIKE the idea of loading mags in a stage. It is PRACTICAL ( nudge nudge to Quigley) shooting afterall.!!

But there can be some stupid ideas as well.

I must say that I like to use some bizzare props to keep peoples hands busy but that is about it.

well, I don't have my rule book handy, BUT I seem to remember that you cannot specify the number of rounds you can have in your mags... Forcing someone to load it would mean that you are focing them to have the mag with zero rounds, so that would fall under that rule... yes/no/maybe (yes, I'm too lazy to download the rule book and check myself, at the moment... ;) ).

The one I always thought was funny is: When you start with an unloaded gun is the command "UNLOAD AND MAKE READY" ? KIND OF AN OXYMORON.

The way to get around that is to specify that all the ammo required for the stage must be loose on the table. A competitor may then load their to whatever capacity they want but they just can't use that ammo for the stage. Do you want to load your mags with ammo that isn't allowed for the stage, unload your mags at the start signal and then reload them with the allowed ammo? Be my guest;)

Is this a shooting sport or a reloading mag sport.....it make no sense to have to load the mag's.......unloaded gun on the other hand make sense....if I wanted to play real PRATICAL I would just go mercenaries and deployed to Iraq....were they shoot back ;)

ps; I don't think they wait to be shoot at before they load their mag's

Better yet, how about a stage that reflects Canada's reality of a practical shoot?

Pistol unloaded, trigger locked and locked in a case. Are you ready? Standby! Beep! Uncase, unlock, load, rack slide, then shoot...

I've already shot a stage where like that.

Gun was in a cabinet, in a gun case, with padlock on it, trigger lock on it and you had the key and a loaded magazine.

On start signal, retrieve firearm and engage T1 with 2 rounds.

Times were about 10 seconds.

I've also shot a (fun) stage something like that, where you placed your pistol and mags on a table at the firing-point, then walked back to the start position, and while your back was turned, the RO would randomly place your pistol in 1 of 3 drawers and your mags in another. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and I didn't see anything "wrong" with it. I'd like to see a stage where you had to draw a coloured card from a deck before the start, and the colour of that card would be the colour of the targets you had to shoot for that stage.

been done. Halifax nationals we spun a wheel that indicated what colour of targets we had to shoot in one bank of targets. i have also seen cards and golf balls used.

I like that! While looking for your equipment, did you have to scream; "God Damn it woman, where did you hide my tools this time!!!!?".:)

Heh, That would be fun with the 3 drawers :)

Not so much fun for those of us with various degrees of colour blindness ;) ;)

So thats what the computer desk on range 2 is from.

Nope, that was from one of the Quebec Championships; the stage I was thinking about above was down at Frontenac. Instead of "choose a card, shoot that colour", you could simply put different shapes on the targets (circle, square, triangle, etc.) then have a deck with those shapes shuffled around; something that forces you to THINK.
