Hi
I am a newbie from Ontario. I am interested if finding more info regarding IPSC shot gun matches. Fun and affordability is the key feature. What guns do you guys suggest for an entry level shooter.
Thanks

What he said....

Use whatever you currently have (assuming you have) and get out to a couple matches and see what everyone else is using.
Ask a few questions, ask to handle a few shotguns and see what you ultimately like and feel you could compete with.

Having said that, I use a Benelli Supernova as I feel it is the best platform for me.
I think it is more competitive than other pumps.

Oh, and you will probably want to go with a pump as there really is no magazine restriction with regards to our wonderful laws here in Canada.

With a semi, you would be limited to 5 in the magazine.
The plus side to that is that you will become a great reloader!!

While we are at it. What chokes are must have for the IPSC-like matches and for what kind of targets? For instance, stock 590 puts you into a huge disadvantage on buck shot A4 targets, especially when match uses significant portion of such targets. Same stands for far plates and bird shot.

With buckshot stages you just use flight control shells and you are good to go.

That said...........many of us EESAers who tun 590A1s had our barrels threaded for chokes.

I use FULL, MOD and IC chokes depending on the stage.

For long steel and clays that are close to PT clays I fun full.

For Slugs I run Mod.

For general clays and plates I run IC.

We'll have to see the final edition, but Rules Committee proposed revisions voted at the last AGM has this for shotgun rulebook:

---
5.5.6.2 Only cartridges using conventional wads are permitted. Cartridges using
specialized long-range wads are prohibited (see Glossary). See Rule 10.5.15
---

+1 for the 590,...I have the recoil reducer comstock.(looks like a regular stock) the disadvantage to using a pistol grip full stock with a mossberg 590 is the actuation and clicking off the safety,..it is on top. I use the SJ hardware big safety..it is the cats ass. Heat shield is a must unless you want to bond your skin to the barrel.

Lucky for us we live in a relatively free country........

VP and his cronies can rot as far as I am concerned with regard to IPSC and IPSC Shotgun in particular.
I know the OP asked about IPSC Shotgun but he will soon learn that the REAL fun with a shotgun comes in MULTIGUN matches.......

That means no piddly little dictator can make up rules on a whim.

Sooooooo

Flight control buckshot it is!!

(for long tight shots on paper that is).

Outlaw matches are the future. IPSC shotgun is nothing compared to multi-gun, and multi-gun rules are nowhere near as stupid.

Long live the Stormbringer and whole crew at EESA.
Putting the words Guns and Fun back together again.

I did my first few Shotgun/ Multi-gun matches with a 6+1 shot 870P.
Quickly realized the 8+1 shot 590s are the way to go.

My 590 barrel is going to http://www.tacord.com/vangcomp.htm
for the Vang Comp System minus the ports.

Crap I forgot that addition...........SJ hardware BIG safety as well on mine.

I have the speedfeed stock without a pistol grip.....due to the safety issue with Mossys with Pistol Grips.

I just installed one on Lonedrone's Rig before the FNH match.......they make a HUGE difference. My install went sweet.......his was a PITA due to the non tamper screws on the factory.

Oh I should mention that I started with a 870 as well.

In terms of Semi auto guns.............

I would be ALL OVER a FNH SLP...... Saw plenty in the states and they cycle like the devil.

Tac ord did our Vang comp (less comp) conversions as well.

Yeah....if I ever manage to get a 930, the barrel will be going to Casey for cutting and threading...took less than 36 hours there and back...can't argue with that.

Yes I was shooting with the FNH team and saw how good they are.

I'm trying right now to get one but we don't seem to have a Canadian distributor for FNH.
