IPSC sights, rulebook and interpretation

Where do you draw the line as to what is adequate or excessive slide machining to fit a sight?
Should ROs be trained gunsmiths or machinists to be able to determine this?
No machining or refinishing allowed = one less things to monitor in production division.
There are other divisions which allow modifications

I can't speak to other "more realistic" disciplines, but at least in IPSC the level of competition is high enough that top scores are separated by a hundredth of a second.
I'll take any advantage I can get, real or perceived.

The line is pretty straight forward. A dovetail looks like a dovetail, anything more and you've gone beyond what a production gun would/could have as far as attaching sights. As others have posted it would really make no difference anyway, you can't buy or bolt on your way to the top.

If you want to see a fantastic production shooter look up Trenton Sukovieff on YouTube. I've seen his gear, bone stock. He puts in countless hours of practice and shoots pretty much every weekend. I don't think a set of springs or a polished feed ramp is going to make a big difference for him.

I watched a video where someone asked if there was anything he could do to his gun to make him a better shooter, the instructor said yes there is only one thing you can do to your gun to make you a better shooter and that is to "wear it out".
