Palm over the top is fine as long as you don't cover the ejection port. I have seen rounds go off as the slide was being pulled back and it happens right in the ejection port. If you are covering this its gonna be very messy. Every time I've seen it happen the operator was using the slingshot method and still got dinged by the exploding case. Nothing serious but then they weren't covering the port, just a nick on the finger. I would recommend if you are using a hand over method, grab the slide from just behind the ejection port and cover the sights. Are you being serious? I'm just reading through some of these posts trying to get more info on competition shooting. Your answer completely contradicts how we were trained for duty carry. If you did the sling shot method on the range you got #####ed out, it was always palm over the slide as the OP stated.
I would get frustrated with the "un training" I'd have to do
