IPSC Traditionalists

id like a ipsc division where one could use a near stock 1911 and be competitive. Its one of the reasons im leaning more towards idpa rather than ipsc. So i can use my stock 9mm spartan without having to add a bunch of "go fast" bits just to be competitive.
I like keeping my guns near stock or adding a bunch of stuff that's really just competition use.

You don't need to add any go fast bits to be competitive, you just need to practice with what you have. Equipment does not take a poor shooter and make them good.

There was a guy who shot standard with a very old SS 1911 The "fanciest" thing on there was aftermarket ajustable rears. He cleaned up at club matches and placed consistandly in the top 5 at most qualifiers.

When I was a class D shooter, my single stack .38 super broke on the last stage on a club match. Just to finish off the stage, Hungry Beagle loaned me his super tuned highly competitive STI .38 super Open pistol and generously 'gave' me his cartridges to use also.

I CAN GUARANTEE my score did not leap up 4 classes because of the pistol. In fact, my reloads were exactly the same even with a wide mouth mag well.

I sure wish a highly tuned competitive gun would make me competitive with all the great shooters out there. Unfortunately, that takes the fun out of shooting and progressing from different classes.

so with the rekindled division of single stack..(AKA classic)....what would your preference be? make,calibre,,,etc...?

I was thinking a trojan .40 or .45....or perhaps something from sti in ss with a rail, just because...

Maybe the new Rock Island Armory tactical "2011" which really just is a single stack with a full dust cover :stirthepot2:

the sti Duty one has a short dust cover rail for accessories....looks like the cats ass. the grip has a channel to facilitate an easy path for the thumb to reach the mag release. I think if it had a magwell it would be GTG. I have not reviewed theClassic rules....so not sure if I would get a .40 or .45 or if there is an advantage.

.. It would be nice to have a truly Traditional Style IPSC Class. Years a go I shot IPSC, and dropped out, in large part because of the proliferation of the "Race Guns". Travel,Relationship (and Divorce) plus Transfers and Shift Work, also played a part admittedly. .. David K

STI Sentry. I'd get one in .40 S&W, hard chromed and with a Dawson FO sight.

or maybe a STI USPSA Single Stack. All ready to go 'out of the box'.

No good. They specified a maximum length of dust cover which, I believe, is the standard length found on a Gov't model 1911.
Absolutely correct.

so not sure if I would get a .40 or .45 or if there is an advantage.
Me, I'll go 40 as I'm already loading for 40 Standard and I'm not too fond of picking up brass; but the cool thing is if someone already has a 45 - they're set.

Excellent! that's why we approved this Classic Division. But of course, now you don't have an excuse... ;):D

I like Pats' idea of a .38 super!
Just remember you'll be shooting minor. Nothing smaller than 40 for major.

An excellent choice. That's what I picked - got one on order for myself right now in 40.

Given the typical courses of fire we see, 9 round speed shoots, 16 round mediums and 32 round long...with very little variation...the 10 round mags of a 9mm or .38 super make a lot of sense. With better courses of fire I'd be tempted to go .40.
This may change under the new rules where I expect we'll see all short courses will be 12 rounds, 24 for mediums and 32 for long...with little variation...

Don't forget that short courses were amended at the GA. Short courses may now be 12 rounds, and medium courses may now be 24 rounds.

Since major is limited to 8 rounds and minor limited 10 rounds, having +2 rounds of minor compared to major may make a huge difference if we start seeing 10 or 11 round short courses.
