There is nothing wrong with the HP, you can use it fine, BUT (!!!): because it is a single action pistol, you will be forced to complete against guys with really high end custom built guns. To complete with the rest of us who use regular duty-style guns (in the "Production" division of IPSC) you need a gun which can fire the first shot in DA (see full list of approved guns here: http://www.ipsc.org/proddiv.php ) ; if you like the feel/size/shape of the HP, might I suggest a CZ-75B (or CZ-85Combat, for an extra $100) - those are great IPSC/Production guns, and you'll be shooting 'against' people using similar equipment.
I use my Hi-Power for IDPA. I'd use it for IPSC too, except it's 9mm (minor caliber) and the sights are a bit small. I'd have no problem using one in standard class, against 1911's, etc., if it made major caliber. The original idea of IPSC was to have all gun types (auto, revolver, etc) compete together, equally. Breaking it into different categories goes against the whole spirit of it (Jeff Cooper rant mode over) . But then we wouldn't need IDPA.
Then again, Jeff Cooper didn't have race guns and double stack major calibre standard guns in mind either......handguns have evolved greatly in the past 30 years.....
