After a weekend of shooting my Poly 305 i've noticed that my rear sight apature has become so lose and flimsy that i'm able to just pull it without much force at. I was going to scope it but i've decided i want to keep my 305 old school with some good after market iron sights. (save the scope for a bolt action) I've been looking around but i want some opinions of anything you guys have, had or thinking about getting. Cheers! :cheers:

Many guys add the Garand rear aperature to their M14/305s.

Here is one on Ebay rght now, and they ship to Canada.

pull it apart check to see if anything is stripped, threads and gears are known to strip, if everything is good, put back together, adjust the nut on the windage side so it is tight, too tight and the windage/elevation adjustments won't move, to lose and the nut backs its self off, once tight and operable add a drop of loctite to the nut,
i've had 2 norcs, 1 set of sights where ####, the other are mint, ymmv
 
I got a grand rear sight for sale right now on the EE that will fix this problem ASAP for ya. All Nork/Poly rear sight's are garbage except if your one of the lucky ones that got a fluke good one.
 
X2 on the M1 Garand rear sight (same as M14 except elevation knob, M1 graduated in yards M14 in meters). Affordable and top notch ($50-100).

If you are a serious iron sight shooter and want an even smaller aperture (.595) you can get a NM USGI or krieger one and install it into your M1 sight base (add $50).

If you are a really serious irons guy and must have 1/2 moa clicks (standard sight is 1moa per click) it starts to get expensive ($250).
You can try to find a complete USGI NM rear sight or get the Smith Ent NM rear sight through Brownells that is already match prepped.
 
J996 got the Sprinfield NM one and love it. All I did was buy the windage, elevation and apiture and slapped it on the grand base. Works sweet. Also the white line on the grand base is a huge plus. One question though...
Why don't they come white etched anymore?
 
White etched? Cool, I just use the Welfare method and dab some 'Whiteout' on the lines, then clean it all off with Acetone.

Personally, I'm happy using M1 Elevation and Windage knobs on my Norinco M14. The rest of the parts are chinese (base, aperture , spring cover) and they work well. Mind you, I have had good success with the Poly M14 I acquired last August; their sights work well, surprisingly. :rolleyes:

Hey Hungry...I'm shooting irons only next year for service condition. I'm making my own NM type rear sight. I think I lucked out on the iron sights on my Norc.

BTW, anyone file their front sight to a point?
 
Yes, I've always advocated (keep spare parts in case you mess up ;) ) the cheaper welfare method of tweaking, so yes I have had success filing down my front sight. I would taper the front sight post towards the muzzle...

Then I would take a buddy's mic (rometer) and file (away towards the muzzle) that front sight post on both (left and right, just count yer strokes) sides using an 8" fine mill bastard file. You will also experience some 'file rub' along the interior of the front sight guards, but that is minor. Oh yeah, I filed the front sight from it's original dimension of around 80 thou to 0.062" plus or minus... That's the NM dimension.

Then dab a cotton swab/Q Tip with 'Cold Blue' to touch up the bare metal on the front sight filed areas.
