Thanks to the book The M14 Complete Assembly Guide by Walt Kuleck and Clint McKee I was able to conduct this photo review comparing the treelinem14 . com rear sight which I just purchased and the Norinco 2009 rear sight.

Admittedly, my stock Norinco sights weren't all that bad and they still work, but the new set offers no binding, crispier clicks (better function), better finish and better quality machining on both the elevation and windage knobs as well as on the Pinion Wheel.

I was able to learn quite a bit about the qualitative differences in machining and function and felt it was worth the experience and upgrade cost. Here are a few photos from my Sunday morning installation.

I shot them for some time on my first M14 as they were decent. Some do not work as well as others so it's sort of hit or miss with the quality of them. Even though mine worked well when I did upgrade I found it to be worthwhile. Fit, feel and function were all improved over the chicom OEM sights.

Regards,

They were 69.95 us + 21 shipping but the Norinco sights are quite poor from my experience with 4 different rifles, all from 2009. Maybe some of those could have used a re-install with copious amounts of grease but I never tried. I have 2 sets in a ziplock bag out of the four so perhaps I was too quick to judge. Still, from what I saw, I wasn't very confident leaving them on the rifle. The new set is exactly what it's all about. No question as to quality. I think they will outlast the rifle.

Another great thread on a much discussed topic. I get a great many rear sight questions, lots of where do I get new sights, how do remove and install. This thread helps the community and makes life at the keyboard easier for guys like Hungry and myself.

Are these sights the new reproduction garand sights that are now on the US market? Or are they surplussed garand?

Been reading lots of threads about the Chicom iron sights. So how bad are the Nork sights??? Is it really wroth replacing them???

Maybe I got lucky, but I have not had any issues with my sights. The only thing I did was to reshape the front blade (ground the edges to make it thinner at the top) so that I could get a better sight picture. I could smoke gongs all day long at 300 yards without any effort at all. Just have to get over the roller issue and I'd be a happy camper.

Replace your iron sights (or just the 2 knobs) if you are a dedicated iron sight shooter (Like me :D ), it's worth the upgrade. If you scope(d) your M14, then don't bother spending the money on USGI M1 Garand sights/knobs. Save your money! :)

Cheers mates!

I'd have to second that.
An inspection will tell you if you need to replace.
You should be able to tighten the sights at the windage knob and elevation and windage should work correctly.
If they knobs bind and turning one causes movement of the other. Replace the sight or just the knobs.
Another thing is inspect the base and ensure centerline is machined on center as this is more common than is talked about on the net

Like several others have said, upgrading the iron sights is well worth the money. I got an M1A rear sight assembly last time Spcamno did a group buy, and you wouldn't believe the difference it made.

An aperture drilled to center with the nice clean sight picture of a US rifle would be worth it to me to spend that cash.

I didnt see it mentioned but would you mind taking a micrometer and seeing just how much off center the norinco peep hole is to the one on the treeline m14 and if someone could possibly compare the treeline unit to a usgi unit ?

i dont know if its just mine but my peep hole seems to be not very centered.
